I arrived in Australia alone in 2022 to build a future. After securing our PR in 2024, my wife and 9-year-old son joined me in July 2025. Since their arrival, our relationship has drastically deteriorated.

We are currently in a state of "in-house separation." We maintain separate daily lives, yet she continues to cook for me, creating a confusing façade of a normal household. Simultaneously, she sleeps exclusively with our 9-year-old son, effectively excluding me from their routine. Communication is minimal, and any attempts at intimacy are met with rejection. It feels like she wants to maintain control over the household structure while actively blocking any genuine emotional or physical connection. The tension peaked this past March, and the environment has become suffocating.

I feel isolated, silenced, and I am struggling to find my place as a father.

I am currently reaching out to Relationship Australia Victoria, but I need perspective:

Is it common for a 9-year-old to sleep with a parent in this context, and how can I reclaim my role as a father without escalating the conflict?

Has anyone experienced this type of "performative duty" (cooking/household chores vs. total emotional coldness), and how did you navigate it?

From your experience, is this kind of deeply entrenched dynamic something that a professional counselling (RAV) can realistically resolve, or does it require a different type of intervention?

Is it inevitable that a situation like this, characterized by total emotional withdrawal and parent-child enmeshment, ultimately ends in divorce?

Any advice or strategies for re-establishing healthy boundaries for my son’s development and my own mental well-being would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there! It sounds like you’re trying your absolute best and this really is such a difficult situation to navigate but always seek professional counselling for the best advice.
but ill give it a shot..

1. no, children at that age usually start to grow on their own and separate from their parents in search for their own identities. having your mother sleep with you as a 9 year old can lead to separation anxiety and other things that aren’t good. BUT at this moment of time, you ARE NOT trying to reclaim your position as a “father”. you need a wife to be a father so before all this you need to be a husband. if you try to reconnect with you child first and they see that you aren’t even connected to their closest parent, mum, they will see no point and you’ll get no where. but if you really wanted to, spend time with you children cause that’s all they’ve ever wanted.
2. you NEED to communicate with your wife in every single way possible. you signed up for this marriage and you CHOSE to love her so you need to be doing everything in your favour to reconnect. this doesn’t mean drain yourself out, but sacrifices need to be made. women love when you notice things and do things without asking. cook dinner before she does. clean the house before she does or has to ask. just do without the say. couple counselling is a great idea if communication isn’t working. you need to get rid of the idea of masculinity right now and just be the most gentlemen man even movies couldn’t portray.

3. if you guys work really hard and really wanted to be together then yes it’ll work out in the end but if both parties dont want to do this anymore or even just one there will be no point.

4. definitely not, no matter how long it takes human connection is something everyone searches for especially love between husband and wife.

i believe in you!!!!

Hi there op , and very sorry bout everything going on , it's heart breaking. Have you any idea what changed with her, why, was everything normal over the phone and stuff before she came ? Can you talk at all and just find out wth is going on and why the change, l think l'd insist if it were me, she can talk, she knows exactly what's going on.

Your son in the same bed at 9, well l sure wouldn't have wanted to be sleeping with my mum at 9 , can you set her up another room or bed untl this stuff is well, hopefully worked out.

Just on your son and you, so important. My ex w got really weird with our daughter for a few yrs , admittedly l'd been working and stressed a lot to and stupidly realized how much precious time l'd lost with my d and how it had become all about them . l think ex w kinda got possevive or something in the end and seemed to be almost blocking me from time with my d in the end it was really bizarre. Anyway, in the end thk the Gods l woke up that l'd lost so much time with my d that t had gotten that way and from that second on l started making up for those few yrs and at times l literally had to kinda block my w and stop her taking over again- in my head just saying no, no more of that shyt- that was in my head, can't really remember how it was on the outside to my w but l was trying to be careful about it but at same time stepping up if she tried blocking me or taking over. A few mths and things got sorta normal again and l was spending all the time l could with my d and we'd become really close again thk God. Ex w sorta came good too, she even admitted once that she'd realized how bossy and controlling she'd become.

Good luck with everything man and "never," lose these precious yrs with your son.

rx

Thanks for your thoughtful response. I think you hit the nail on the head regarding the 'blocking' dynamic.

To add more context: my wife and I have been separated by distance since I moved abroad in 2022, and she seems to have developed a very strong independent routine that doesn't include me. There is also a significant disparity in our professional environments—she works in a high-pressure, high-income circle and has frequently criticized my career progress and financial contribution.

Additionally, there are practical triggers: she struggles with sleep and uses Stilnox, while I snore, which has driven us further apart physically. It’s become a mix of emotional detachment and practical incompatibility. I agree that I need to 'step up' for my son, but breaking through these layers of resentment and habit is proving to be a massive challenge. Your experience gives me some hope that I can reclaim my role as a father even if the marital relationship is at a standstill.

Ah you have to man, simple as that or she'll walk all over you and your sons relationship. You don't even have to talk to her about it unless you can both talk nicely privately but for me it was more an action thing .

l literally started seizing any opportunity with my daughter and early in w would try her blocking stuff but l'd be thinking in my head nope no way known no more of that it took good few mths for her to realize l was back on not going anywhere. Can't remember why l didn't discuss it with her, think we were a bit like you guys atm, going through a very weird patch.

But yeah right , sorry about the rest. lt does seem to go to their head if they're on a better footing than us, lap it up when it's vice versa . Not sure what the answer is there, hopefully others have some ideas. And the 3yrs separate yeah, have heard that one before too. Maybe you can find yourselves again , all crossed for you.Though if you can get some time alone while he's at school or something , communication is always a good start right.

All the best

rx
