Hello

I have started antidepressants for the first time and I am so thirsty and am drinking heaps of water.

This is good for me as I didn't used to drink enough but I was wondering if this could be from the medication?

Hi Perrybj. Feeling thirsty and drinking lots of water is perfectly normal when starting antidepressants. Dry mouth is one of the most common side effects of the medication. The dry mouth should go away after two to three weeks when you get used to the medication but it may not go away completely. Everyone is different. It is nothing to fret about.

As you're perhaps aware we're not able to give names of medications on the forum. There are some anti depressants that can make you thirsty but I would speak to your gp or a pharmacist to check. As you say it's not a problem but I guess you just want to know.

dear Perry, I agree with Helen, but two to one on it would be your AD, as they all can have different side-effects, some which may affect you more than the next person, however these may ease off over time. Geoff.

Hi Perrybj,

It's definitely a possible side effect, but as the others have mentioned it's worthwhile letting your treatment team know. It might be a minor side effect, but it could also be a suggestion of something else. You don't want to be consuming too much fluid as this can wash out beneficial electrolytes from your system which keep your body hydrated.
