Hi All,

After some persuasion by a fellow poster I thought it might be a good idea to share our stories of " When therapy sessions go Wrong" or are just downright funny and/ or awkward. Surely I cant be the only one that has had these encounters. Mind you I have been in therapy for many years and only recently have found some of these episodes amusing.

So if you have reached that place where you can have a bit of a laugh at yourself or maybe its the therapist who's done something strange please share ,

So I'll start with a couple of mine. Just a couple of small teasers to get the ball rolling

Early in my therapy I was totally embarrassed to share anything , and could only talk if my psych turned his chair around. Now he was only a short fellow and the chair had a high back, so all was good and I started to unload. My psych was quiet and I thought listening intently until I heard the unmistakeable sounds of snoring! Yep my deepest darkest secrets had put my psych to sleep! UMM had a lot of explaining and grovelling to do.

Another time I became so paranoid that my secrets were going to be discovered by people that worked in the medical offices -other docs, receptionists etc so during one session I grabbed his paper and pen and refused to let him write any notes of our session! Of course I didn't think till after I went that of course he would write after I left - probably best I don't know what he wrote after that session!

So that's it , if you have some stories I'm sure others would love to hear the lighter side of therapy .

Heh good topic!!

I turned the tables on my psychiatrist once because I was bored in the session. I quizzed him about why he chose the field and about his families mental illnesses. Hehe. Was interesting actually.

Hi Stressless,

I saw the encouragement you received to start this thread and well done for doing so, it's a great one. I hope it also encourages those who may be a little nervous to see a psych but seeing another side of it.

Hi CMF,

Thanks for that . yes I agree it can be daunting seeing a psych- even after all these years I get nervous before an appointment, wonder how I'll come across or if he'll think I'm crazy - too late !

I guess for me despite the turmoil I can now relax a bit and I'm very lucky to have a psych who has been there from day one and most times I see him as an old friend I'm going to have a chat with and I can let loose and not worry what he thinks I mean if you cant throw a tantrum with your doc then where can you.??

I can't think of anything funny that ever happened in a session, just something weird. I was talking about our marriage when my psych started talking about her now ex-husband. I spent the rest of the session counselling her and listening to all troubles. She went into great detail.

At the end, I felt like asking her to pay the fee!

I hope everyone joins in so we can make the experience of going to speak to someone even slightly less intimidating!

Well you know my contributions but I'll share them here anyway. There will be more to come I don't doubt it...

First session of psychotherapy: The anger exploded and I swore like I've never sworn before. Hubby says tactfully when I'm angry anything resembling ladylike goes out the window. I dropped the C bomb! I hate that word! Shocked myself. Shocked the psychiatrist. Couldn't look him in the eye haha. Funny though he mentioned in session two that he was shocked that I present as polite, reserved, guarded but the anger is healthier. That I shouldn't bury it. So yay for me. Swearing like a sailor is ok apparently 😊.

Session two: Psychiatrist had a new painting. It is crap! A Van Gogh with awful colours. Depressing to look at. I told him so. Said I'd rather stare at the wall. Asked why on earth didn't he choose something happy or colourful? Even after the session I laughed and said nope still hate it. He said he'd take it off the wall for my sessions 😊. On the day that I am well enough to not need the therapy I'm going to buy him a decent painting.

Ah well. I suppose the point of therapy is to talk and be honest. 😊

Not sure if this counts, but...

Back in high school, southern California in the 70's, I went to see the school counselor after having another bully session courtesy of the football team. It was late spring, and over 90F (no A/C back then); so the counselor was wearing a lightweight sundress to help escape the heat.

Anyhow, when I walked into her office she was looking at something in the filing cabinet. Must of startled her as she slammed the drawer shut rather quickly and spun about. The thing is where she spun about, her sundress didn't.

That was the one day I happy to have bullies 🙂

Hi All,

Cant sleep so thought I would add another funny story.

It was some time ago now but I was in the middle of a particularly difficult session , when I started feeling very sick. My psych was talking about opening up more an d I kept saying I don't feel well. He kept insisting I needed to open up and let it all out. Big mistake.! Because that's what I did - literally. I tried to make it to the door but didn't get there. OMG I was so embarrassed , My doc had to move to another office while his was cleaned.

To this day my psych leaves an empty garbage bin by my chair - took me a while to laugh about it but as I told him it was his fault for not believing me - so I'm ok with it !

Any one else done anything like this or worse?

Hehe I know I shouldn't laugh but I think that story is my favourite.

Have to admit I'm kind of surprised that this thread hasn't been swamped with stories. I thought there would be heaps of amusing moments out there 😊

Hi all,

This post just made my day. 😊 I can't say anything funny has happened to me with my psychologist but think you are right I thought more people would share stories. I find that some days after a session I go home and feel lighter and some days my brain comes up with answers I never knew I needed. Guess I'm getting bang for my buck. I hope more people can feel comfortable with sharing some of their journey be it funny, sad, helpful or just normal. Although somedays I have to say normal is definately a weird state of mind. 😎

Oh my goodness. Oh my bloody goodness. Psychotherapy is bringing out the absolute worst in me haha. No idea how I am ever going to look him in the eye next week.

I just spent a solid hour talking to my psych (and the wall) about sex. Holy crap I am losing my mind. I told him about suggesting a threesome as an excuse to end a relationship that felt incestuous because he was like a brother to me. I want the floor to swallow me up! What was I thinking?!

Got one to beat that Stressless? Please please tell me you do. I am halfway between mortification and hysterical laughter.

Nope got nothing to compare to that , but its still early !

I had to read your 'cringe worthy' story before I left for my psych appt today - just so I had a reference point in case things went pear shape- like "At least I didn't talk about having a threesome " or something like that !

Don't worry about facing him again- he probably wont, a/ remember, b/ has heard worse. So hold head high and own it girl !

I was feeling embarrassed then saw a post by another user about books by Athol Kay. Seeing as I just bought my husband a few I think maybe I should save my embarrassment for when they come in the mail haha.

Years ago I had a breakdown and ended up in the emergency department of a hospital for three nights waiting for a bed in a mental health ward.

I asked the psychiatrist what it meant when I felt like throwing the soup against the wall. He told me it was probably because the soup tasted awful! He even invited me to chuck it at the wall. I am not sure who would have been more surprised if I had done so, him or me!

Early this year I had another melt down and was escorted tot he local hospital via police car. The dear, kind policeman was trying to make conversation with me. He asked me what bugged me the most at home, I told him it was the dogs barking next door.

He told me he had the same problem. I asked him how come, he had a gun why didn't he shoot them. The poor policeman looked at me and stated that he believed I really did need some help.

Not quite as good as the threesome story, but all I can muster right now.
