Hi everyone.

This is my second time on the BB forums. I think perhaps I might stay a bit longer this time. I suffer from depression, generalised anxiety and panic disorder and have seen about 4 different psychologists since I was around 21. It was mainly as the result of untreated bullying from a young age. My learned hopelessness and low self esteem have unfortunately persisted for such a long time untreated that I feel that they have become a part of my makeup. As a result, all treatments including medication don't seem to have made any changes. I am only 26 years old with a degree in psychology and have nothing to show for it. Although I am now back studying a masters in a different field, I am not coping with anything and feel that I might have to drop out. I have just moved to NSW a few months ago and don't have much of a support network. Or at least the support network I do have over here don't seem to understand. They say that my self esteem issues are a thing of the past and that I just have to "move on". I have stopped talking to them about it and have become more and more socially isolated because I don't think they want to hear any more. I fear it's only a matter of time before I lose my boyfriend. He is supportive for the most part but also quite critical of me and doesn't seem to understand why I can't get my stuff together. I now feel it was a mistake to move to NSW and feel totally trapped. What support groups are out there to help me? I need something to help me because all the standard methods haven't worked. I emailed a suicide helpline last week because I was feeling overwhelmed but all they could give me was, "we hope you're ok." I just don't know what else I can do. Thanks for listening.

Hi Catlady,

I'm very sorry to hear how hard it's been for you.

Your support group don't sound very supprotive to me. Have you been able to find a GP in your area? They can complete a mental health plan with you which would entitle you to a number of free sessions with a psychologist.

"Meet UP" is an online organisation which facilitates outings & events for like minded people. There is a huge range of specific interest groups including bush walking, movie apprecaition, wine tasting, dancing and even board game players.

There's also a group for people living with anxiety/depression.

Check it out online - there's bound to be a suitable group for you in your area.

Take care of yourself & I look forward to hearing how you're getting on.

Regards

Hi Catlady!

I'm only new to BB but when I read your post I felt like I could help 🙂 I'm almost 22 and I suffer from bipolar. I was diagnosed when I was 20 but have been seeing psychologists and psychiatrists for my symptoms since I was 16. I've been on a range of medications and tried other treatments. I am unresponsive to a lot of medication or am responsive for a period of time and then it becomes no longer effective. You mentioned you were in NSW. The mental health association of NSW have a website and provide a number of anxiety support groups all around NSW. I attend one in my area. They help you to not feel so isolated and the people who attend share similar experiences to you. There is a lot of information on their website under the Find Support tab. also just wanted to say that i have had experiences with un supportive friends. You shouldn't have to hold things in or feel embarrassed to talk to them. Please don't lose hope, i am now surrounded by some lovely people. People who want to listen and help me. Caring people are out there 🙂 and they wont make you feel isolated.

I hope this helps you 🙂 Regards, Chloe.

Hi Catlady,

If you like group meetings you could try the Grow program. I went to a meeting for awhile when I needed some support. There is no real cost to going just a donation if you can afford it. It is anonymous but it is possible to make friends. And you can go for as long as you like.
