Hi Rubaiya!
Recently diagnosed ADHDer and psychology student here! I went through my own period of time where I was questioning if I had ADHD because of the perceptions of other people. HECK, I questioned if I had it during the process! I say if you’re really relating to the symptomology, there’s no harm in seeking diagnosis. The psychiatrist is a great place to start! Also in terms of the one hour appointment, my first psychologist appointment during my diagnosis process was the same length in time! Unfortunately for us they have so many other people to help as well as us and can’t always spend as much time with us to get to know more about us as they’d like.

Please know whether you have ADHD or not, you are not alone! So many people struggle! And if you feel any ADHD tips may help you in your daily life, give them a go! No one will gatekeep helpful information because you do or don’t have ADHD!

Happy ADHD searching!

Wishing you the best! 🫶

ADHD Diagnosis

Hi Lovely People, Last year when I got to know about ADHD and its traits I was relating myself with it. I asked people surrounded by me and they told that everybody somehow relates to ADHD and I forgot about it. Coming to this year again I am feeling like this. And want to know about it more. Even if I don’t have ADHD, I would still like to discover and talk with a psychiatrist to navigate my life better. I tried out TAFE counselling twice. But I feel so frustrated because its just a 1 hr session and you can’t even share everything and then they tell you to come after 2 or 3 weeks. I feel no use. I went to GP to get a referral to a psychiatrist but he suggested me another GP. I am afraid that I might lose my patience and stop asking for help and continue living my life like this. As an international student I have no idea what to do and who to ask for help.. I am falling out of my studies and it is really scaring me. I would be really grateful for your help 🙏

Hi Rubiya, Thank you for reaching out and sharing what’s...

Hi Rubiya,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing what’s been going on for you. It sounds really frustrating trying to make sense of what you’re experiencing while also feeling like you’re not getting the support you need quickly enough.

A lot of people do start by relating to ADHD traits and wanting to understand themselves better, so it makes sense that this has come back up for you. Wanting to speak with a psychiatrist and explore it properly is a really valid next step, especially if it’s starting to affect your studies.

You might find it helpful to go back to a GP and clearly ask for a referral to a psychiatrist for an ADHD assessment, and let them know how much this is impacting your studies. If you have access to a university or TAFE support service, they sometimes also have student wellbeing teams who can help guide you through the process or connect you with the right services.

If things are starting to feel overwhelming, you can also reach out to the Beyond Blue Support Service on 1300 22 4636 or via webchat. They can help talk through your options and next steps.

It’s really positive that you’re continuing to seek answers and support, even when it’s been frustrating. You’re welcome to keep sharing here as you figure things out.

Kind regards,
