Hi Mudcakes, good luck with your appointment.

You would probably be best searching on Google, I think it's different for everyone, and the Psychiatrist, just like Psychologists.

Psychiatrists deal with medication and diagnoseses, so they can prescribe you meds, control them and diagnose you. That's what mine does.

Mine also tries to give me therapy as much as he can (I have trouble with Psychologists) and lets me vent, and asks me questions.

Like Grandy said, it would depend on the therapist, just like a GP and Psychologist. I hope it goes well for you.

You could try and ask them how they work, what to expect etc at your first visit, or do a Google search like I suggested.

Or, if you know the company where the Psychiatrist is at, you could email or call them maybe, or look on their website and it should give you an explanation of what to expect?

Dear Mudcake...

Not sure if all Psychiatrists work the same...my very first visit was my psychiatrist asking me all sorts of questions to do with my mh..I suppose to get to know a bit of my story/trauma and what my thoughts and feelings are now...

Then he started me on some meds and made an appointment for 6 weeks after..to check how the meds were working....He also asked me if he can share and talk to my Dr. about what he seems to be important for follow up treatments with both him and my Dr. Which to me was okay...

I am not sure if this is the normal or every Psychiatrist has his/her own way of doing things...

Wishing you all the best luck at your appointment...and please try to remember that your Psychiatrist is wanting the best life for you...

Grandy..

Hi Mudcakes,

Welcome, and thanks for your question. I really hope that you can click with the psychiatrist and find them helpful.

I agree with everything that's been said here; although sometimes it can be a bit daunting it's just them getting to know you and understand what brings you there so they can help. While there's no doubt they'll want to know about your mental health, they might also ask you questions about your home life, if you are working/studying, your relationships, sleep and appetite.

Here's a really good link that goes into a bit more, hopefully you find it useful -
