topic The Power of Prayer in Staying well

Hi The Possum,

Very interesting thread. I personally have found in times of need I have turned to my faith and prayed. Not for anything in particular, just to be guided through it. I can't say I ever discuss my prayers or faith with people as everyone is entitled to their opinions on it and I have mine and that's that.

Everyone reacts differently, I can't say I have heard of people turning away from their faith however which is interesting but I guess it goes both ways and you found peace in something else which is ok and still came back to your faith and beliefs. I think it's a comforting thing as well for many people.

My best for you,

Hi everyone

I know it's a strange topic to raise and per the 2016 Census the most popular religion is in fact.. No religion!

But for those that do have a religion, regardless of what that may be, I'm curious if when you are struggling do you fine yourself turning away from your faith? Or more strongly towards your faith?

My belief structure is both Catholic and Buddhist (yes I know, strange mix but it works for me).

I found that last year when I was deeply in the throws of bipolar depression I turned away from my faith and sought solace in other things such as photography and bush walking.

Once my condition became more stable I turned back to my faith and now although I'm in another bipolar depression it's controlled and more manageable and I find myself praying and meditating quite regular. This not only provides solace but I find myself stronger and with greater courage.

This of course may be placebo, but the fact remains it is having a positive impact.

I'd love to know others thoughts and if so, who and what your prayers consist of.

Peace x

Hi possum, you've started a very interesting topic.

I'm an atheist myself and try to follow the buddhist teachings, because it makes sense to me and it works. I mean meditation and being in the present....I practice it quite often. I practice being in the present especially when I'm anxious or depressed. I'm not religious, so I don't have a particular faith, and I don't pray. I use the buddhist teachings as a technic to get rid of anxiety and depression and it works for me. So it's not a faith, but a practice.

This is my experience......I'm spiritual, but don't believe anything blindly.

Thanks Jay for your thoughts.

It does seem strange that at my greatest time of need I would turn away from my faith. But I did. I think I was just so angry with myself, the world, and everyone in it, that I couldn't bring myself to pray as I just felt there was no longer any point.

Seems bleak I know, but it was certainly a bleak time.

I agree also, faith isn't something I bring up with people as people can be quite strong on their views and I never want to come across that I'm trying to convert people (haha!)

My husband has no religion and we have mutual respect and support each other etc.

I'm interested in what kinds of responses we may see on this thread.

Take care x

Hi Sola

Thanks for your input.

Yes and that is exactly what I like about Buddhism - it's a way of life based on logical principles and harmony that make sense.

I meditate at the temple and find it brings me peace and clarity particularly with feelings of anxiety that I often struggle with.

I'm always observant of the wide variant of people who attend. From very young to very old and in between - large demographic. It certainly seems to appeal to a wide audience and I think it complements other religions. So it's not unusual to have a mix present.

Peace x
