Hello Paul

Thank you for visiting my first topic which such kind words, considering I wrote it with a tired mind 🙂 I had to check my library to see if I've read any Dale Carnegie books, shall keep him in mind the next time I come across the self improvement genre.

As you correctly stated it should be returned with a thank you and a smile. If we do indeed possess a certain amount of self esteem. I agree we should at least make the effort to be respectful, it's not seen as being weak at all. I do not think you have a problem with your ego 🙂 Thanks again for your reply this evening.

Hi,

It's true we all have our good and bad days. I was wondering what everyone else does with the compliments they receive, do you just brush it off as feedback or do you get creative. Projects like a Happiness Jars are a great boost in our busy lives! Any extra ideas would be appreciated Thank you 🙂

Hello Stacy

What a great topic 🙂 I was lucky enough to read Dale Carnegie when I was a kid and read that when someone gives you a compliment you dont brush it off or say no...It is a sign of common courtesy and respect to the person that has given you the compliment to say 'Thankyou' or 'Thanks' and smile 🙂

I take a compliment as a gift of kindness and embrace it as I should.

I have a healthy ego not one that I need a semi trailer to carry....

Good on you Stacy.....A person with a reasonable amount of self esteem will say 'Thankyou'

Kind Thoughts

I agree with Paul - it's actually quite healthy to accept the compliment and give thanks! Good for your self esteem and for theirs!

I wasnt born yet of course lol....I found the book in my dad's bookshelf....lol. One of the best self help books I have ever read.

Your thread/topic is a good one....

Got a copy now so I look forward to reading.

What I clumsily tried to mention at the beginning of this thread was the creative idea of a Happiness Jar.

There are many different kinds of them anyone can make, what's important is what goes inside them. My therapist suggested a different take on it for the start of the year. She said when I get a compliment I was to write it down on some nice paper each time and keep it inside the jar.

I was to keep doing this exercise until the end of the year. Then on the last day of the month I was to open the jar and read all the notes. Of course you can improve of this by adding anything achieved over the year also. Ps. The jars don't have to fancy, you can use any old mason jar or a smaller jam jar 🙂

Hope this inspired someone to be creative 🙂 It's not a new idea just an oldie but a goodie.

Thank you for all the replies and reads.

~Stacy

Hi all; thought I'd join the discussion.

Complements work both ways. Ergo...thankyou all for your great contributions!

Answering the previous post by 150lashes; there's nothing wrong with complementing yourself. It may seem odd at first, but it works if you let it.

I complement strangers in the street by commenting on their pretty clothes or the scent of their perfume. It always gets a smile, and sometimes a nice chat.

It's difficult for me to accept complements from others if they're big and meaningful. Small one's are easier.

Cheers Dizzy x

Hi everybody,

I once found receiving compliments unsettling. Having spent much of my life hearing that I was insane, good for nothing and a waste of space, self-esteem is not something I grew up with. It had to be built up from scratch and against the odds.

These days, if the compliment is heart-felt, I am appreciative and say "thank you". But if it is given for some self-serving purpose, I will smile to myself (or have a good ol' inner chuckle) and change the subject.

Hello Starwolf

Thank you for sharing your feelings on this topic, I've had my fair share of put downs from rude and ignorant people. Sadly it is a reflection of their poor character. Self esteem was something i had to work on too. Things are a lot better now, please remember that you are beautiful no matter what happens! 🙂

Hi all above. I too used to find it difficult to receive compliments, growing up with narc, alcohol-fuelled, emotionally abusive people. My first MIL did teach me how to appreciate kind thought, words, deeds. My now ex MIL (3rd MIL) is not a good person in that when anyone compliments her, she will rubbish the person and compliment. I tried to teach my ex MIL while I was with her son, my ex hubby to say 'thanks' for the compliment, she again laughs derisively. Saying thank you is also a compliment as well as giving a compliment. Incidentally, my ex hubby is not a good compliment receiver, good at giving (not to me). I now openly admire women's taste in clothes, makeup. Men for manners, smiles, and clothing.

Lynda.
