Hey Everyone and New Posters too!

I have had Depression and GAD since 1983. I am fortunate to have a crackerjack GP and Psychologist to help me help myself. I live opposite a nature reserve and noticed the local council guys doing major pruning of non indigenous plants/trees with chainsaws and shovels..Even though they get paid for it I went across with Ice Cold bottled water and Pepsi Max cans in a bucket of ice just to thank them for their hard work and caring for this beautiful reserve. I met two new wonderful people that were actually fully qualified Horticulturalists.. They were over the moon with ice cold drinks :-).My depression vaporised after I thanked them and walked away. I was just thinking if anyone else has done a good deed to a person and felt really good about doing so?

hi Paul, I'm sure these people would have appreciated your thought and quenched their thirst.
Yes I had to drive a chap down to Melbourne yesterday to pick up his van after it had a reconditioned engine installed by a friend, a return trip of 3 1/2 hours, plus his 2 dogs and my puppie. Geoff.

Last time was yesterday when I did my usual weekly volunteer work at a local Nursing Home. I go and visit an old lady there every week, sometimes just for her to chat and sometimes I take her out for a cuppa or the local art gallery. Yesterday the Home was short staffed due to some staff on leave, so I helped out with distributing the old folks morning teas. Then come lunch time I helped several of them up to their walkers so they could get themselves up to the dining room. And others with dementia really bad I escorted them to their proper table/chair because they had no idea of where they were going or why.

Some of these old people have no other visitors, no family nearby or friends still alive. Its quite sad. And they all like their hugs. I have several I go and talk to every week, and not just the one old lady I officially go there to visit. Sometimes I also take my little dog with me, who they all love. And she enjoys a visit also. She's very gentle and happy to comply with all the pats they give her.

I enjoy doing my volunteer work, it makes me feel good about myself. To know that I am doing something that is needed and appreciated. It only takes a couple of hours out of my week, but its a big thing for them.

Hi there. Last week a friend (I've only just met) was told she had to move as where she was living was sold unexpectedly. This woman is a solo mum with a son of late 20's who suffers severe mental health issues Autism etc. His mental age can vary from 6 to 10, so he's a child in a man's body. I spent the entire day helping her clean, move small furniture. The thrill I received was her warmness, she gave me lunch, she kept me supplied with water. I was exhausted by the time I got home, but it was a 'good' exhausted.

Little things mean a lot.

Good thread Paul! I can see this isn't about singing our own praises so much as highlighting how much better we can feel about ourselves when we help others. Love it!

I like doing little things, like putting a carton of milk with Help Yourself on it in the office fridge where everyone's supposed to bring their own and people get very snarky if you pinch theirs. (I don't say who it's from). Costs me bugger all and means no-one goes without their critical morning cuppa.

Thank you Paul. The amount of help I've had on the forums really renewed my faith that there are good people out there. Before I 'knew' BB I was so lost and alone, I vowed that if I could ever help someone not to feel that, I would. Depression and that lost feeling is horrible. Before BB I blamed myself for what happened to me with my ex and his parents. Geoff was my first contact and he helped me realise some people just refuse to admit they need help. What I am like now, is the real 'me'. Through everyone on the forums, I found 'me' again.

I would love to see your photo, your dog is drop dead gorgeous and they say people who own dogs are similar in kind nature and nice looking. You have a lovely, caring nature. I bet you are 'blond haired, blue eyed' etc.

I have also found myself again too after being on since Jan. The therapeutic benefit of the BB Forums have been a godsend to me. You are lucky to have had Geoff as your first responder...he has great wisdom, kindess with a good dose of common sense. You are right on the ball with the hair...its blond and still all there lol and green/blue eyes.

Hi Paul, I was amazed when you said it was my 1000th post. Time flies when you're doing something, you get something out of. I think my eyes are similar in colour to yours, must mean we're one of the 'good guys' eh!!! You're 100% right about Geoff, (don't tell him though, lol). He helped me realise there were so many things that I didn't have to accept. I felt such a failure when my marriage went pear-shaped. Through Geoff's kindness, wisdom and never-ending patience, I realised I didn't have to put up with the nonsense I was living with. It's an absolute miracle, Geoff didn't throw the towel in with me. Between him, Tony and you, I somehow got the strength to move and get on with my life. I think you were one of the ones who helped guide me through the dark I was living in.

If I'm an angel, you're the guiding light that helped make me the angel. Thank you for not giving up on me.

Bless your kind heart for your heartfelt thoughts. I am very proud to be a 'guiding light' especially as only being here since January. I might get dragged through the coals for this and that's fair enough.... I have been involved in training/bonding staff to work as a team for over 30 years. The BB Community is very important to me as I have a lot to share about metal illness and can help others the same way you and Geoff help others. That is the primary focus of what we represent as members of the BB forums

There is one very simple word that can increase the longevity of established (and new posters coming back) members of the forums many times over that we lack....

'camaraderie'

'mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together' ....friendship, comradeship, fellowship, brotherhood, sisterhood, togetherness and solidarity'

I hope this gets through Lynda...I have just spent a few hours with my 85 year old mum and she was surprised that we are not encouraged to 'bond' as frequent members that help others. Mum was born in 1930. I think she has a point. With all respect to the great job that the BB Cafe is doing of course...Your comment about "This is the mutual admiration society part of the forums" is what I was referring to...

Hi Paul, Many hugz to you too. Until you pointed it out, I didn't know I'd reached over 1000 posts. I did a course on marriage guidance many years ago in N.Z, but I never felt the same fellowship and I suppose family back up from other people I was involved with that I've gotten from this forum. We were mates, but not close like BB is. Our clients actually were kept at arms length, there was no guiding towards Dr's, other counsellors, therapists. These forums are warmer and more helpful. It was a govt assisted agency and when the govt 'pulled the pin', that was it.

At these forums, even though we joke a bit towards each other, we never stop caring for each other and those needing help. It's great to be part of a team. Camaraderie is the perfect description for what we have established here.

Hi all,

I am sharing my good deed for the day. I follow a couple of world wide communication experts on a fb group. They have over 48 thousand followers on their page.

Yesterday they posted a picture of a fat ugly sealion and wrote Kardashians before the surgery. They often post jokes, some less politically correct than others but never crossing a line. I have always thought they were gauging peoples reactions. I watched and before long there were 10 or more comments from other people being nasty about the Kardashians.

Now I am not a fan of the Kardashians and know little about them really other than who they are but this didn't seem right. I wrote my own comment saying "wow. Cyber bullying by professional well-known people - all class".

Today I looked again to see if there had been any response to my comment and I find that the post has been deleted in its entirety.

A small win. Hopefully they will think twice before misusing their influence to body shame or inspire hateful comments against others.

We need more people building each other up, not tearing each other down.

Ride on Carol. I have to pick up a good friend this evening from surgery. His wife is unable to due to a previous commitment. I am more than willing to help this family as they've been my 'rock' many times. I actually told the wife I'd be less than impressed if she didn't accept my offer. I never consider it's putting myself 'out' when I offer help, I just offer because I can.
