I’ve been experiencing extreme periods of hopelessness, anxiety and brain fog for months now. It varies from day to day, some days I will be fine but more and more days recently have been a sense of dread for the work day, emotional turmoil, exhaustion and I’m honestly just on the brink of tears at any moment.

I’ve been told I’m performing well at work and I appear put together but I am barely holding it together on the inside. I have been given a lot more extra responsibility at work due to performing well but it all seems like an endless conveyor belt with no end. I started working from a really young age and have been working continuously at multiple jobs since then and half my life I have been working already. I feel exhausted, I don’t have energy or joy for hobbies anymore and I spend many days just crying.

I look like I have a good social life on weekends but I spend most of them alone because I can’t bring myself to reach out and talk to anyone. Am too socially exhausted.

Unsure what to do, is this a normal experience.

I’m really sorry you’ve been carrying this for so long. It sounds incredibly exhausting to appear like you’re coping well on the outside while feeling overwhelmed, anxious and hopeless on the inside.

What you’re describing can happen when someone has been under a lot of stress for a long time, especially when work responsibilities keep increasing and there never seems to be a chance to properly recover. Losing interest in things you normally enjoy, withdrawing from people, feeling constantly exhausted and crying more often are all signs that you deserve some support rather than having to keep pushing through it alone.

It might be worth speaking with your GP or a mental health professional about what has been happening over the past few months. You could also consider whether there is anyone you trust who you could let know that things have been harder than they might appear.

You don’t need to have everything completely fall apart before reaching out for help. The fact that you’re noticing these changes and talking about them here is important. I hope you’re able to give yourself some of the same care and understanding you would probably give someone else in your position.
