Hi all. Going through a recent separation and it’s hit me hard. I’m at the point where I think I will be taking anti depressants to get me through, bring back some quality to my life hopefully. I was not depressed prior to the separation so the doctor indicated this is circumstance based or similar. I’m interested to hear from people who were in a similar boat. Took them due to a big incident in their lives. Did they work for you? And how long did you need to take them before you came out the other side? I understand we are all unique and ultimately it’s going to my medical professionals that guide me but I’m still interested in hearing about people’s experiences.

Hi B bear and welcome to Beyond Blue

It is good you've found your way here to our community and asked a good question. Sorry to hear about your separation, hope things get better for you.

You say - I’m interested to hear from people who were in a similar boat. Took them due to a big incident in their lives. Did they work for you? And how long did you need to take them before you came out the other side?

I started taking anti depressants when I had a breakdown after 18 months of working through a childhood trauma that I remembered late in life. I'd resisted for 18 months then my body could no longer cope - it shut down.

It took about 6 to 8 weeks before the medication became effective. During this time I saw my psychologist and doctor regularly. I had 3 months off work before I returned 3 half days a week for about 2 weeks, then slowly increased that. In all it took 5 months before I returned to full time work.

As you say, everyone is unique and will have different experiences. You'll find others have a different sorry.

By the way, I'm still taking medication (9 years on) and use it as part of my ongoing management of my PTSD, anxiety and depression. I now recognise that there's always had an issue with PTSD, anxiety and depression, but it wasn't diagnosed for 45 years.

You're not alone B Bear, I'm sure others will be along to give you their experience of taking medication and depression.

Feel free to browse the forums or to use the search tool above to do keyword searches, e.g. - separation and depression. Only if you want to - no pressure.

Kind regards

PamelaR
