topic Emotional Blunting in Depression

Just wondering if anyone has experienced emotional blunting?

I have been on an anti depressant for some time and have just realised that I am emotionally numb.

I cannot stand this feeling as I have not been able to cry or experience any emotion.

I have stopped my anti depressant for now and am feeling fine.

i just need my emotions to return and am trying to flush the medication out of my system.

Has anyone experienced this and if so how long did it take for your emotions to return to normal?

Thank you

Hi Elsam,

not in the same position as you - you are trying to get the medication out of your system and I am on anti-depressants. I can laugh (sometimes), smile (sometimes), but I find that if I am not on anti-depressants then I mood range can be from 0 (bad) to 10 (good). With medication the range is from 3 to 7. For me the medication works as well as it can - it is best I have tried so far. This restricted range of mood is kind of like emotional numbing. And if you asked if an

less able to laugh or cry even when appropriate

feel less empathy for others

not being able to respond with the same level of enjoyment that you normally would

loss of motivation and drive

then with the exception of empathy that would apply to me. The interesting thing is when my psychiatrist asked me whether I allow myself to feel happy.

As for how long... I dunno. As a said the medication helps with the symptoms I have. And don't really want to change in case the next one does not work.

Didn't answer your question, but listening to you.
