Asking Dr to hold medication for safe keeping, is this ok?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this question.... has anyone ever given prescription medication to their doctor to hold for them because they didn't want it in the house and didn't have anyone else to give it to for 'safe keeping' until they felt better? I hope that makes sense.

If anyone has - did the doctor accept it/was willing to take it, what was their reaction? I'm not sure how to phrase this - how do you go in and say 'I don't trust myself enough with this in the house' without them thinking the worst? Will they give it back? Or should I not even ask?

Hi Sarah5,

Welcome to the Beyond Blue forums Sarah. I would think that a Doctor would want to treat you for feeling this way, rather than hold the medication for you. If you think this is a risk for you then perhaps you need to seek some more support with this. You could get some professional advice on the BB phone service, it's free and 24/7.

Hopefully you can find a plan that helps you to feel better. Would you like to tell us how you are feeling or what you are suffering from? Please take care of your self, we care that you are okay.

Hi Sarah

Welcome to Beyond Blue.

That’s an interesting question you ask – and I’m along similar lines to Jacko, in that I really think this is something you should be raising with your doctor. This is an important subject and they should definitely be made aware of your thoughts on this.

Personally, I keep my scripts for my meds with my chemist – so I phone them up when I’m about to run out, they run the script through and I go to pick it up – but I guess yes, this IS different, cause I then take my meds home with me and take them as prescribed.

Your post here is that you don’t feel confident in having your tablets in your house; which makes it very difficult for you to take them on the regular basis that you should; unless you can go and visit the chemist each day – don’t think that arrangement is a good one though.

I’m not overly helping here, but I would be very interested in hearing what your doctor can advise with regard to this – and PLEASE don’t be scared or worried about going to the doctor to tell them this – this IS important for you.

dear Sarah, I think that your post goes much deeper than what you have said, however I go along with Jacko and Neil.

I also let my pharmacist keep all of my scripts, then they are never lost, and I also ring up a day before I pick them up.

If your doctor keeps your scripts and when you go to pick them up he/she will probably want to see you, meaning it will cost you another visit fee, but more so they will be more concerned on how you are going and if something else needs to be done to help you. L Geoff. x
