topic Numb and sleepless in Depression

Hey Everyone.. First time I have ever been to a website like this. It's refreshing to see so many people in the same boat finding the support they need.

I've been feeling different the past few months. Which is strange because nothing unusual or dramatic has occurred. I don't have any hobbies anymore because I don't enjoy them, everyday feels the same and it's an effort to get out of bed in the morning as I feel there isn't anything to look forward to.. It's almost a numb feeling, whether that's good, bad, or neither I don't know. Sleep has become pretty much non-existent. It takes me a long time to fall asleep and when I do it's not for long, constantly waking up in the middle of the night. I also get this sick feeling.. kind of like being nervous but it's constant.

I was just wondering how many other people have experienced this and if they found anyone/anyplace that helped. I have no idea where to look.. I feel nervous about seeing someone.

Thanks

Hi amandap,

Thanks for joining the forums. The symptoms you describe are commonly encountered by many people with anxiety and/or depression. It's understandable that you feel nervous about seeing someone, but your GP would be the best place to start.

Perhaps start with the anxiety/depression checklist on our website here: http://www.beyondblue.org.au/the-facts/depression/signs-and-symptoms/anxiety-and-depression-checklist-k10

This is a clinical assessment test that you can print out and take to your GP, and describing everything you've written above would also be a good start to getting you the best treatment.

Medication may be an option, as are sessions with a psychologist or counsellor. Many people find that checking in on a forum like this to speak with others about their experiences on a regular basis can help as well, so please stay with us and let us know how you're going.

Numb and sleepless

Hi Amanda

Brilliant of you to come to this site and provide your post. That can be a big effort for people to do this and I’m heaps pleased that you were able to do this.

Your feelings are shared by so many of us on this site … and I can tick off most of what you’ve written against myself. The sick feeling and the constant nervousness are shockers! I’m on meds for most of my issues; 3 different types and to get where I am it’s been a process of trial and error and that’s been through with my psychiatrist.

So I feel you’ve made a great and positive start by coming here. Your next step is go and see your GP (or if you’re unsure about a GP), they have listings on this site for GP’s and you’ll be able to find one in your local area – and they are fully versed in mental health issues, and once there, things will start to fall into place for you.

And Amanda, this is easier to say than do, but try and not be nervous about seeing someone. This is a really positive step that you’re taking in order to help you cope and get better from what you’re experiencing. There’s absolutely no shame in being this way … and on this site, you’ll receive so much advice, guidance and most importantly support – and remember, there’s no question that’s too silly – and never be afraid to ask questions here.

We’re no professionals, but as you’ve quite correctly said, we’re all in the same boat (and it’s a biggun) and we can offer our assistance wherever we can.

And hope to hear from you soon,

Cheers

Neil
