I am looking for serious advice.. I feel like this is the only place I can turn.

I am 24 and I work in marketing, however I have found that I have been made redundant from nearly 2 roles already. I am just so upset and taking it to heart/personally that it’s my fault and I am very incompetent at doing my job.

I have started at a new job now and really just want to stay here for a while because my partner and I are looking to buy a home this year.

Can someone please help me with my worries. I feel so upset that I’m just incompetent at everything. 😣

Hi Noomi,

That’s really tough. I had a friend who was made redundant three
times! And she was definitely not incompetent. I understand though its so hard
not to take it personally when it happens more than once.

Remember you are starting out during a pandemic so quick
organisational shifts and redundancies unfortunately are much, much more
common. It sounds to me like you have just been a little unlucky.

I know it can be really scary when you’re buying a home, but
all you can do is give it another go. Even to be able to get a job in this climate
is really difficult – so WELL DONE. You obviously interview very well, which is
one of the most pressured scenarios a person can be in. That doesn’t sound like
an incompetent person to me.

Many people feel like they are not worthy of their job –
that they are fundamentally incompetent and don’t belong there. It is so common
there is a name for it called ‘The Imposter Syndrome’. One important and
interesting take back when dealing with these kinds of feelings is that if you
care this much about doing well you are likely not incompetent. Those that are
really ‘incompetent’ (not that I am a fan of that language) generally don’t care
at all about what they are doing and therefore wouldn’t experience your anxiety
about doing well. You know who does though? High achievers.

And I agree with other posts that seeing a psychologist or
counsellor if you don’t already can really help – remember they can assist with
all kinds of issues and dilemmas.

And its always good to remember that you are a human being
first deserving love and respect so take care and remember - BE KIND to yourself.
