First things first - as someone that's lived with panic and anxiety disorders for over 15 years now, allow me to genuinely empathise with your position - it truly is a difficult one. Secondly, when it comes to finding the right medication, you simply can't jsut hop on and off and expect them to work, unfortunately they take at least a couple months to really build up in your system to the point where you'll be able to judge on if they are causing any improvement for you. So yeah, I'm gonna need to call you out on that one, because saying 'you dont feel like you have the time to sit around and wait to see what works for you and what doesn't' simply doesn't cut it. Time is going to keep moving forward regardless - you might as well stay on the meds at least long enough for you and your practitioner to assess if they may actually be helping.

And yes I am sorry if that came across as blunt, but sometimes that's how we need the info presented to us. And I still need to be reminded of it myself quite often as well...hell I'm still on the non-stop cycle of getting off and on meds trying to find the ones that work. For over 15 years at that!

I’ve had anxiety now for about 7-8 years and it’s completely changed my life drastically! I’ve seen many counselors, therapists, psychologists and non of them feel like they don’t work for me so I’ve given up seeking help. I’ve tried some medications but I don’t stay on them long because I feel like I don’t have the time to sit around and wait to see what meds work for me and what don’t. I’m a single mother aswell and I feel so hopeless. I want to be diagnosed properly for my anxiety disorder so I know what I’m dealing with and can find the right solution to help me live “normal” again and be the best mum to my daughter.

Hi there,

Welcome to the forums and I'm glad you're here. By reaching out, I can tell that you do want to improve your mental health and seek support. I see you want to be diagnosed properly for your anxiety and I imagine it was tiring to go through so many therapists and not find the right one. Would you like to speak to the BeyondBlue counselling service for a chat? Here is the number if you want to call: 1300 22 4636

I haven't been on any medication for anxiety before but I would imagine it would take a while to find out what works and what doesn't and needs patience to so do. If you do go back onto them, you might want to stick to whatever the advice is of your doctor as you might find the right one if you wait it out. There's no 'right solution' for anxiety or anything, you just have to find what works for you. As someone with anxiety myself, I think there isn't necessarily a cure but you can find things to help you manage it. Is there anything you're doing now to take care of your mental health?

Feel free to reach out whenever you want and we're here to chat,

PsychDiaries

I lose hope when I hear stories of people who battle with anxiety disorders and panic disorders for over 10+ years it scares me honestly because i remember when my anxiety wasn’t a thing I felt untouched that’s how I describe it and for my life to drastically change and need quite abit of support it makes me depressed. Yes that’s all goods I rather someone be straight up blunt then beat around the bush. I know I won’t know which meds work if I don’t stay on them long enough for it to show its effects on me I get that straight up but as someone who’s a young single mum i don’t get help what so ever with my daughter I struggle to go on public transport I couldn’t even tell you the last time I’ve ever sat on a bus by myself and not had to worry about anxiety it’s been that long I don’t even go to malls or Westfields by myself because of it I always do online orders etc, I catch Ubers and taxis or friends and family when they can. Some days I feel good and some days I feel bad. It affects my eating if I don’t feel good I won’t have an appetite and because of that I struggle to put on weight as I’m already someone who’s always been on the smaller side aswell I get self conscious of my body makes me not want to leave my home because of it. Anxiety has affected me and my life so much. I don’t tell no one how deep down I’m struggling bad I can’t I’ve got a daughter to put first and make sure she’s always right which is she is and I’m proud of myself for it.

Hi thank you for taking your time to reply to my message bless. Honestly that’s the very first thing I want done and that’s to get properly diagnosed. I also find it hard to find mental health support as it depends on the location of them I’m more then happy to do by zoom video calls but going in person it’s how far the location is I don’t do well being so far from home or where I’m familiar with. I know there’s no cure there’s only ways to help cope with it unfortunately. And I have been thinking to go back on meds and actually stay on them to see what works and what doesn’t but it will take time. As of right now I do Art Therapy with an Aboriginal organization.
