How can I cope with anxiety?

Due to some issues happening at work and will happen more in the coming months, I feel so worried that I might fail everything. I am failing now already but I may be failing more soon. It is so hard not be able to see any hopes at this stage. I feel I am losing part of myself lately. How can I cope with this anxiety and stay normal? Could anyone please share your experiences?

Hi Pink grapefruit

I feel for you so much. It's definitely stressful when a whole stack of questions start coming in such as 'How am I going to manage the changes? How am I going to keep up? How am I going to master the things I'm employed to master?'.

I can relate to a lot of this at the moment, in my own job. I absolutely love the people I work with. I used to enjoy a lot of the elements of the job. The demands were manageable, time frames (to get things done) were manageable, the amount of tasks were manageable and so on. Now with a new company having taken over, demands are greater, tasks are more plentiful and the pressure is easily felt to the point of stressful. I've found the ultimate question has become 'Is this still the job for me?'. The short answer, 'No'. I'm wondering whether you feel your job is still the one for you.

While I think we can stay in a job where the demands and tasks have changed, so as to challenge ourself to develop, it's definitely worth asking 'Do I want a job that provides me more so with a sense of ease to some degree, one that's suited to my nature as a person doesn't experience elements of joy under high pressure?'. Some people absolutely thrive on change and high pressure challenge. This is one of the ways in which they experience a sense of joy, drive and passion in their life.

I'm not sure whether you can relate but sometimes I find that my choices can determine how much I struggle down the track. With me preferring what's easier, when the high pressure stuff comes up I find myself having not practiced the hard stuff. Not saying everything's easy but a sense of ease is preferred at times so as to manage my nervous system. I find I can fail to manage easily under pressure, based on a lack of practice. I believe the choices we make, to do what's easier, can be based on a whole stack of other things going on in our life at the same time. A greater sense of ease at work can stop us from reaching tipping point when it comes to the amount of challenges we already have going on in our life. We can be so hard on ourself without considering all the factors we're facing.

I've found imagination can play a major role in how I manage at work. One of the reasons I stay in the job I'm in is based on me being able to easily imagine everyone I work with (minus one staff member) stepping in to help me when I'm in a high pressure situation and need help. Or if I can imagine falling behind a little yet being able to catch up, based on a particular strategy, that puts me at ease also. The imagination can be either good or bad for our nervous system. All depends on what we imagine.
