Hi Slippers,

Thank you for being a part of the BeyondBlue community - it sounds like you have been having a really tough time working through some big decesions for your family. This is a safe place to talk about these things. It takes a lot of bravery to open up and you should feel proud of taking that step.

It might also be useful to talk to someone about how you are feeling and you can always call the phoneline on 1300 22 4636 or try the online chat
https://online.beyondblue.org.au/Webmodules/chat/InitialInformation.aspx

Thank you again for sharing.

Kind regards,

Hi all. This is a repeat story.
My 91-year-old mother has moved into a nursing home. I live by myself in the
family home, I have 3 sisters but they live elsewhere. The nursing home wants
550k to pay for Mums room in the nursing home. I had applied to become a
protected person last December through the Department of Veteran Affairs. 2
months later after I called the DVA to find out that my application had been
denied because of the amount of money I make per year. I make 47k a year and I
am 49 years old. My family and I had two real estate agents to price the home
last week. We also had a meeting with a financial planner afterwards. The
findings of the financial advisor were that if we sold the home that Mum would
get charged more for her room due to the house sale. The financial advisor
suggested that we complete a Financial Hardship Claim Form through the DVA. I
am at the end of my tether and don’t think I could potentially spend two more
months waiting for a yes or no answer from the DVA.

My family said that I should see the doctor for my anxiety; I sleep okay but I
ruminate about everything I have to do to organise important matters. Whether
that is completing DVA forms or make sure I am paying the bills on time. I also
find that I am not enjoying the fun things in life like watching tv, and I
would rather stay home but my thoughts are dark. I have no one in the family I
can share this with, 2 of my 3 sisters are fighting with the other one, and my
sisters nit-pick every decision I have made in life and where I have gone
wrong. They say they're trying to help me.

So can I go and see a normal GP doctor about my anxiety or do I need to see
someone specific. I am not suicidal; I have had family and work colleagues go
down that path and I am not going to let the bastards win!. I need help but I hate just existing instead of living and
preferably enjoying life.
Hi Slippers I am sorry with the tough situation you are
with your elderly mother.I really feel for you and the financial stress this puts you under .
Yes for seeing your GP about your anxiety or any mental health problems. They will be the first person to see and they might put you medication or do a referral to a phychologist. When you see your GP try be as honest as you can with what's going on mentally. So definately see you GP.
Take care,
Mark.

Hello Slippers.....and a wave to Mark above

You have a lot on your plate. I understand your situation as my mum is nearly 91 and this is a tough period to go through. Seeing our GP is excellent advice as they have a better understanding re anxiety now than even 10 years ago

You have everything to gain and nothing to lose by making a double appointment and mention what you have above

The forums are a safe and non judgmental place for us to post Slippers. There are many gentle people on the forums that can be here for you

my kind thoughts

Thank you for your kind
replies. Last night I felt like 20 different emotions were coursing through me
at one time. Mum had been living at home until November 2020 and since moved
into a nursing home. I miss the daily talks we use to have when I can share my day,
talk, and unload my problems, concerns or annoyances with her, not having that
avenue I have bottled a lot on the inside. I consider myself lucky that I have
two male cats living with me, they have become very close and clingy to me.
They are great companions but not great conservationists.

I decided to give myself two days off from looking at the DVA forms; my heart
is not in it knowing what did or in this case did not happen when I was denied
protected person status last time. I have heard about online anxiety audio
help, my sister suggested that I should also listen to these on the way in to
work, but I am not sure where to start.

I wanted to list down what I believe affects me so when i went to the doctor i had something meaningful to tell him.

I am affected
by:

Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized
by persistent worry or fear. People with this disorder worry about a
number of concerns, such as health problems or finances, and may have a
general sense that something bad is going to happen.

Social anxiety disorder is also known as social phobia. People with this disorder are fearful of social situations in which they might feel embarrassed or judged. They typically feel nervous spending time in social settings, feel self-conscious in front of others, and worry about being rejected by or offending others. There is a nice girl at work and she asks me how I am. I am guarded with my response because in my mind I have nothing to offer her if she wanted friendship with me. She now thinks that I am rude and has brushed me off

Difficulty concentrating
Restlessness, I cannot sit still
Irritability and anger
Sleep disturbance, my brain wont switch off and brings up bad scenarios (rumination)

Dear Slippers I hear your pain, helplessness and frustration. Too much too soon. There is alot on your plate. If you feel how you feel, seeing a GP may or will help. Better days will come. Day at a time.
