Hello! I dont know if this is the right criteria to do this in, but, I've been taking some medication for anxiety/ suicidial ideations. I am starting to feel ashamed of having my medication. Any suggestions? I am on a low dose, it was making me happy and it still boosts my mood. I know i am in a dark place, because I have had days forgetting my medication and I feel suicidial and anxious straight away. Anyone have any suggestions on how to not feel ashamed and anxious about taking it??

Hi SiobhanW

Welcome to the forum.

I have been prescribed medication in the past and had to come to terms with the idea.
Someone said to me to think of it in this way. If I broke my arm I would have a cast put on it and not think twice about doing it. With medication it is no different. We need help with a mental health issue and medication is a standard way of treating this. There is no shame at all in taking medication. It’s fantastic that you are seeking help.
We can not do everything on our own.

you will be surprised how many people need help from time to time.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hello SiobhanW,

I have used medications for various things, including antidepressant medication. I know at times I thought if people knew, I would feel embarrassed.

Some conditions still seem to carry a certain amount of baggage & stigma, around them.

I realised mostly it was to do with my own attitudes, lack of education & the perspective I chose to take.

There certainly are still some people out there who hold similar judgemental views.

You don't have to share their views. The meds help you, & are yours to decide to take or not. The c consequences to yourself if you don't, for whatever reason, are yours.

It would be no different if you have diabetes & need to take insulin. Or medication to prevent episodes of psychosis, or epileptic convulsions.

I wonder if you are receiving therapy with anyone, & if you've talked to them about your feelings. I am aware these feelings are common, so if you haven't yet, try to talk about it with someone, even your GP.

I hope that helps.

Hi SiobhanW,

Wellcome to our forums!

Im on a antidepressant and I’m grateful that we have them……. The people in the old days weren’t so lucky.

If it helps you then that’s great!

My gp manages my antidepressant, just keep seeing your gp so your medication can be monitored.

Please don’t be ashamed of it…… if someone had a heart condition they would be given medication… no different for anxiety.
