Hi Hunter,

I am sorry that your partner is struggling. I found this link from headspace (https://headspace.org.au/young-people/managing-your-mental-health-and-disclosure-at-work/) useful when I was having trouble with a similar decision. They have some information about disclosure and an individual's rights in terms of protection from discrimination. I hope that you may find this helpful. Apologies if it has already been suggested, but maybe a discussion with her GP may also help her get some clarity about her options.

I hope that your partner is able to find the help she needs.

Take care.

Hi everyone,

I was hoping to get some advice on whether or not having it on your health record that you've seen a psychologist/psychiatrist would affect future job opportunities?
A lot of companies these days have you sit a full medical exam before offering employment, and this often asks about mental health history.

My partner is struggling with anxiety and depression, but is hesitant to seek professional help, as she doesn't want it to affect her chances for future employment opportunities.

I would be very grateful if anyone has any information or advice.

Hi Hunter,

I'm sorry to hear your partner is struggling.

I guess it depends on what job she will apply for. For certain jobs it is important and mandatory to have a full medical (mining, operating machinery and so on) so I guess she would have to disclose it. The job description usually mentions whether it is a requirement.

Over the years I've been told during several job interviews I would have to sign a medical disclosure form (I work in admin), but I've always said I did not see why that was important for an office-based job. The reason they wanted it was because it was their business policy.

Personally, I no longer apply for jobs that require it. I don't see the point of disclosing my medical history for an office job.

I'd say it's a personal decision, but it would be a shame if she misses out on medical treatment and support for the sake of a job. Most employers would not think twice about letting you go if needed, so why give up your chance of getting better for the jake of a job?
