Dear Sam,

Welcome to Beyond Blue and well done for reaching out.

Please keep in mind that you wouldn't have got the new job if they didn't think you were capable of doing it. But yeah, I hear you. It's hard to regain your confidence after having a toxic manager. I had a very toxic boss for two years, and looking back, I just don't know how I survived. But I did. And now I have a new boss at the same job and am happier than ever!

As for those potential mistakes ..... well, we all make those. It's all just part of the learning. I have made loads of mistakes at work in my time, even in my current job. Take it just one step at a time and you will be okay. Practice, practice, practice is the key. Remember to breathe slowly in and out and ask questions about anything you are unsure of. As a doctor once said to me; "The only stupid question is the one you do not ask."

Let me know how you go. I'll be thinking of you. xo

I start a new job tomorrow and I’m scared. I don’t know if I’ll be good enough, I’ll probably make mistakes. I don’t know if leaving my other job was the right decision and whether I’ll like this one better. Every time I think about it I tear up. My old workplace was toxic and this one manager treated me like shit and bullied me into Leaving. I liked the simplicity of my old job and I will miss that but it was just the same stuff, different day and I hated it. I don’t know if I’ll rise to the challenge. I’m really nervous and fear I’ll jusr break down when I do one thing wrong.

Hi Sam145,

It is hard to be in that spot, where you're pushed out of work by a boss, I've been there. Getting out of a bad environment can be refreshing though and it can certainly change the day-in-day-out feeling you've been having.

Have you considered speaking to a GP about struggles you've had with bullying? It can take some time to move on and having that extra guidance in a new job could be beneficial.

Otherwise, I think you'll be fine. First-day jitters are completely normal and after adjusting it'll be worth it. Good luck!

Thank you both so much for the words of wisdom and advice it’s made me feel heaps better about the day. So I’ve actually had maybe 2 or 3 shifts but they’ve been on really busy nights and i haven’t really learnt much I’ve just observed and been given jobs off the floor. And it has been 3 weeks since I had worked there and yesterday was my first official shift. It went better than I thought, it was really quiet so I had time to ask about anything I was unsure of and to take my time with everything. I’m still not sure if it’s for me and if I’ll like it but I should give it a chance. I still have the same nerves about today because again I don’t know what to expect I just hope I can get through it again. I’m still lacking a lot of confidence and I tend to stand back and let the others do it while I watch I’m scared to do it myself. I have tomorrow off and then the weekend will be super busy so today is really my only chance to sort of have it down packed

Sounds like you've had an amazing start Sam145, well done. I'm glad to hear it is going well. One thing I remember someone saying was 'give yourself time to be the new kid' and this really helped me take time to learn the job.

I think you're doing really well 🙂
