Hi Obelina,

Given that I/We on here are not really medical practitioners, my advice would be to discuss it with your doctor, as to whether or not your medication may or may not have stopped working. Also, if you are not already/additionally seeing a mental health practitioner, as well as your doctor - who is a medical health practitioner - may I suggest you do that also? Treating the mind, and the mental/emotional symptoms, as well as the physical symptoms may make all the difference.

Best of luck. Hope you feel better soon. xo

Hi...

Ive been managing my anxiety for a few years now without medication, however 3 months ago my anxiety took over (without me realizing until my life went a little upside down). So ive been seeing a dr and taking medication(which has helped so much) being mindful and taking time for myself... but over the last few days ive been incredibly anxious again, overthinking ect... so i have a question, can the medication that has been working stop being as effective?

Thanks.

Hello Obelina, that's a good question you've asked and there <G class="gr_ gr_42 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del" id="42" data-gr-id="42">maybe</G> a few reasons although we can't say for sure as we're not qualified, <G class="gr_ gr_112 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar replaceWithoutSep" id="112" data-gr-id="112">but</G> from our own experience, we can say what did happen to ourselves.

Your depression could be worsening because something else may have happened, or another medical problem so a new different medication is prescribed or as we get older the depression may also become worse due to our circumstances.

Taking medication doesn't necessarily mean our depression or mood is going to stay the same every day and it also depends on whether or not you are having counselling.

Dear Obelina

Welcome to the forum. It's a good place to talk about your anxieties.

Taking medication for anxiety, or any other similar medical condition does not make it go away by itself. The medication is designed to help keep you calm while you function in the everyday manner and give you a breathing space to work on the why and how you become anxious. Bear in mind we all get anxious at different times for our own various reasons. This tends to go away by itself but when you are so frequently anxious it would be good to find out why.

I had a similar discussion with my MH doctor a couple of days ago about medication losing its effect. As I said above medication cannot cure this kind of medical condition and there are unfortunately going to be times when you are particularly anxious. Have you spoken to your GP about getting some counselling? Learning about yourself and what triggers your anxiety I think would be incredibly helpful to you. You can work out how best to manage without feeling totally overwhelmed and maybe can discontinue your medication.

What do you think? Love to hear from you again.

Mary
