Hello, I hope this is the right place to post this

I'm feeling massive regret over choosing to study a Cert 4 in Photography, which I have been studying since February.
I have since been feeling overly anxious and depressed, and I have realized this isn't the right course for me, and it has been causing other problems besides Anxiety and depression.
I've recently finished term 1 and am on school holidays. I'm dreading having to go back for term 2 and believe it would be best to drop out or switch courses.

I regret not going into a Writing course instead, as I feel this is where my true passions lie.
However, I'm really anxious now that if I switch courses, I'll end up disliking that too.

Or that if I drop out altogether, I'll be a failure and won't get anywhere in life, despite trying to.

I feel much regret over this study choice, and don't even know if schooling is for me anymore.
This situation has been overwhelming and impacting my sleep.

Anybody got any advice or been in a similar situation?

Thanks for reading

Overwhelmed by Course Regret

Hi Lyddie 😊

It seems like you have these options:

1. Stay in the photography course: if you do this, I would say: try to relax and enjoy it. If you can try to drop the expectation and stress around it, you could end up really enjoying it and you end up with knowledge, experience and a qualification at the end.

2. Switch to your preferred writing course: I reckon why the heck not? If you're not really enjoying the photography and it's causing major anxiety, drop that and do what your passion is. You say you're worried you may not like the writing course either, but you won't know until you try and even if you find it's not what you wanted, at least you tried and it's not the end of the world.

3. Drop out all together from studying for now: this is ok too ... this does not mean you are a failure at life. You can always go back second semester or third term or however it's structured.

Nnothing is the end of the world. I spent my entire student life on an extreme high anxiety level and now am not even working it any of the fields I studied. I don't consider it wasted time though, as I learnt skills like critical analysis, time management (well ... sort of), peer support and academic writing ... even if I don't use these exact skills now, I'm glad I did my courses.

It's ok to take the scenic route in life.

🌻birdy

I agree. Life is all about growing and learning, and if you realise that you no longer want to be a photographer then you have learnt something 🙂
