Physical Symptoms of Anxiety

Hi all,

I have been suffering from GAD for a couple of years now and have been working towards getting it in control. One of the main issues for me is my anxiety presents itself in physical form as a lot of it has to do with health anxiety.

I just wanted some reassurance/see if anyone else gets this. It always seems to me that ill have one form of physical anxiety and if I cure that, it then goes elsewhere. This may not make sense but I will have a headache for example at work- and then that will be an issue for a few days but then i take some painkillers and the headache will go, but then I will have a stomach ache, or a toothache, or my eye twitches or something. Its almost like if its cant express itself in one form it moves to another- does that make sense? Does anyone else have this?

xxx

Hello KittyCat17

You are definitely not alone feeling the way you do. There are many many people that also suffer from this link to health anxiety causing physical anxiety symptoms (feelings)

I understand you as I have the same awful feelings prior to and when I see my dentist. I physically shake (tremble) and have the dizzyness and shortness of breath etc and its a bad place to be in when we feel like this

The reasons for the anxiety are interesting yet it means that we are generally over sensitised in our lives. Some people are that over sensitised they have the same feelings/symptoms as you do when they are in a traffic jam

Can I ask you if you have a GP that you can talk to about how you feel?

The forums are a safe and non judgemental place for you to post or ask any questions KittyCat

I hope you can post back when its convenient for you 🙂

please be gentle with yourself

That makes sense. Your mind/body is trying to express the feelings and let you know what's going on inside (thanks a lot, body). So it will come out however it can. It's like whack-a-mole. 😛 My symptoms are usually consistent; I get all the breathing related ones like feeling out of breath, chest pain, pressure like someone is sitting on my chest, feeling suffocated, heart racing. But sometimes headaches, stomach aches, dizziness, sweating.

Thank you for the reply 🙂 life got a bit hectic after my post and I actually completely forgot I had posted this here until this week. Yes I think I will go speak to my GP again to reconnect with my psychologist as I haven't been for awhile.

Thank you once again for both your replies. So nice knowing I can come here to talk to others going through similar situations. Its an amazing platform.

Hello KittyCat17,

as mentioned you are not alone here and as far as physical traits of GAD they can be different. I have experienced physical pain to unable to communicate except in a delirious jibber jabber when very bad. So we can often get anxious about getting anxious. What I found that helps me is to focus on something wherever I am, it will not always help but it can reduce severity a lot. Recently I even started wearing earbud headphones so I can listen to my music or podcast, that helped a lot.

All the best

My experience with anxiety has shown its not set as just one thing. It can turn up in many forms. Triggered by many things. I struggle with large crowds, the fear of having a seizure whilst being out & putting my wife through hell. Anxiety can show its head anywhere. Like you said, your eye twitches.good to hear you still work, you have one up on it already. Stay strong & safe.👍
