Hi James1008,

I have many times where I have felt bored, where nothing will keep me occupied or entertained, can't say it happens everyday however. Not sure it has anything majorly to do with having a job or not, I guess it can be something where you are being mentally stimulated by things, something that almost challenges your mind.

Is there anything at all you enjoy doing? Nostalgia is common I find with people who suffer from mental health issues, I personally have it big time, wish I could go back to being a kid when everything was just easier.

My best for you,

Hey James,

Yeah I get that a lot too. I think Jay's response regarding how common nostalgia is, is right on the mark.

Just to add to that, I've learnt to just accept that I can't be a kid anymore. The places I used to think were cool and exciting no longer are. The fact that my parents used to go work and get paid ... yeah, we know what that's really like eh?

But as I've come to accept that, I've also come to accept that I need to find new things to get excited about. Now, I get excited by things like cooking a dish that someone else likes. That gives me pleasure. I also like seeing the stars and being with my rabbit. It's not super duper exciting, but it's nice. I also got into motorcycles which I do find exciting, and I love being lost in foreign cities.

How about you?

James

James, great post and something that I think a lot of people suffer from and do not do anything about it. You posting tells me you are wanting to do something about it, so great work!

When this happens to me, I have a decision to make, am i bored because depression has kicked in and i cannot be bothered doing anything or am i bored because i am just bored.

If it is the depression side of it and I can recognise that, i take the steps required to basically force myself to get going.

If it is just boredom, then i find something to do. For instance, I jump on a youtube session and just go from video to video which can go from watching a fave music clip to funny duck videos pretty quick, research about the stars and universe which interests me, go for a run or swim, practice some mindfulness, watch some sport or really anything to get you going.

Getting bored is a human thing to do, it is how you react to that boredom which determines what you do. Remain bored or find something to stimulate the brain.

Mark
