topic The 'rock bottom' physically ill feeling after coping fine with anxiety for weeks/months. in Anxiety

So I had been doing very well with anxiety lately. I got a new therapist and he really helped. Following his advice I had been making a lot of progress and felt somewhat able again.

Then all of a sudden a few nights ago after subjecting myself to anxiety all day I got a random headache seemingly out of nowhere, started with a kind of radiating tension headache, then the host of 'unwell' symptoms hit, slight nausea, slight vertigo, sensitivity to motion. Feelings of ear pressure and aches. Just feeling genuinely off.

When that hits I find the anxiety is much much harder to deal with. I've felt that way a few days in a row now. Its a really weird set of symptoms and I'm not quite sure I understand it. Does anyone else randomly get stuff like this? Almost after 'build up' anxiety.

Hi DN129

With all that anxiety during the day your adrenaline would be pumping and your muscles will also be tight especially around the shoulders/neck which work their way up the back of the skull thus the 'tension headache'

I still get tension headaches occasionally and they are a pain. Combined with slight nausea it is a huge drain on our mental and physical energy levels which make it even more difficult to deal with our anxiety symptoms.

The digestive system is the most sympathetic to stress/anxiety causing nausea....the bowels can also tighten up resulting even in diarrhea as well and mimic the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

I have suffered as you have with these physical symptoms that are triggered by an over sensitised nervous system (anxiety)

You have done very well by being pro-active with your health and finding a crackerjack therapist by the way.

The good news is that most of these physical feelings will decrease a lot(and the anxiety severity too) over time with regular counseling and meds if required/prescribed.

Great to have you on the forums DN129

my kind thoughts

Paul

Hi DN129,

Thank you for your post and reaching out to us, it takes alot of courage and we also learn from every post. I understand about anxiety in other people and most recently in myself. As a carer of a person with mental health issues I have been reacting to and trying to diffuse anxiety but only recently experienced myself and I don't know but it was triggered by a very traumatic life event and I think every thing happened at once. It wasn't till I experienced it that I realised how debilitating it can be and how its very different to just being worried or stress. Physical symptoms often accompany our mental health and anxiety, it triggers our fight or flight response so automatically affects our physical well being. I can only suggest that yoga and meditation has helped me although some of those breathing excercises give me anxiety. I have 'smiling minds 'apps good for relation but as always I would recommend seeing a GP for the physical and mental health plan and maybe medication. I would also recommend journalling your triggers or anything that seems to come up for you and see if at a later date you could explore them and maybe they have a connection. For me, I need movement and distraction. When I open my eyes in the morning I have awful anxiety so I have to get outside and walk and I get a coffee to just distract myself and get moving, but that is just me. You can call us on 1300 22 4636 or chat online if you feel like it, we would love to see how you are going if you feel like it 🙂 Best wishes Nikkir x
