Hi, I think I've been having situational anxiety for many weeks now. Not sure when it will clear up but I'm trying to cope best I can. The big thing is these damn waves. Just when I think I'm making progress, these strong waves of stress/anxiety come back. Many times they are overwhelming. Feel like crying. How can I deal with these waves please? anyone.

G'day Gandalf123,

Welcome to beyondblue forums. I'd not heard of situational anxiety before, thanks for introducing me to a new term.

I been doing my crying at home when overwhelmed, so I go to bed and cry it out. Sometimes I've called a helpline or a online chat counsellor, others I've poured out to my wife, yet others I've retreated under the covers bawling hysterically holding my torch until I recover. Focusing on my torch is a technique called anchoring, something to distract myself from my suffering in the moment.

Is your situation such that you can cry? or use something to distract yourself in the moment/at need?

Given that a situation is causing anxiety, can you avoid the situation or change/shape it to be more comfortable?

For example, schools and workplaces are required to help you feel comfortable in those environments. A counsellor or work supervisor could help there.
