I have anxiety, everybody is saying its normal. I'm going through some big things at the moment. I have just about finished my bachelor degree, I have been offered honors, but I'm going through the process to get my dream job. This job is takes a several months of interviews to possibly get selected. I'm afraid that I won't get the job. I can't stop thinking about what I will do if they find me lacking and choose someone else for the job. These months of waiting gives me a lot of anxiety. HELP

I have enrolled for honors next year, just in case. I just can't stop thinking or talking about this job. It's all I have wanted for a few years. I'm worried about what people will think if I don't get the job. Like I'm useless, dumb, crazy etc. I need this job because it's really expensive trying to make it on your own when the basic wages don't pay enough to survive on. I have a part time job and I study part time and that's pretty much all I do. I have sacrificed everything to get this degree and job. All this waiting is driving me up the wall.

The process of getting your ‘dream job’ – you have mentioned that it can take several months of interviews to get selected.

I’m guessing from this that you have been successful in getting to the interview stage? Is that correct?

Now, having been around for a fair while; I raised my bat to the crowd earlier this year when I hit 50 ! I have realised that with how the job climate is nowadays that if you are successful to being able to get to the “interview stage”, that is a ‘win’ in itself. Ok, yes, a lot get knocked out after reaching this stage, but to get there, it shows that you have the skill necessary that the employer would like to do the job.

However, it’s the next stage that is pretty much out of your control. You are interviewed, as are others and everyone is striving to put their best foot forward and to showcase their qualities in being able to do the job. But that’s where there may be other candidates who are better credentialed, possibly more qualified, had more experience in a similar style of role, etc etc. I’ve heard so many of them over my time.

I think the best you can do is to do everything possible to dazzle them when you’re at your interview, but also from my experience and it’s taken a while and it’s a lot easier to say than to do; but to try and not build up big hopes for success.

That way IF you don’t get it, the let-down isn’t as deep; however IF you are successful, then the after-party can be huge.

With regard to what others think, again that’s outta your control, but generally people don’t kick someone when they’re down after missing out on a job – my experience again is more of sympathy and support. If you experience the former, then I’d be removing myself from being around those kinds of people.
