Anxiety taking over

Over the last month, my major depressive disorder has morphed and is at present hugely anxiety ridden..... Something I have never had to deal with before. I am only just functioning, I feel like I am on the cusp of falling apart or imploding.

I went to my gp, set up a new mental health care plan and she referred me to a local Psyche. Only problem is the psyche cannot fit me in till May! I am on a waiting list also, but that is no guarantee. I just don't feel like I can get through without help..... More immediate help.

Is there somewhere I can go? Someone to speak to? I really want to get in with someone soon.

Many ideas or advice?

Welcome to Beyond Blue and thank you for coming here and providing your post.

My immediate thought would be to see if there was a chance to get back to your gp to let them know of the delay. Now, I’m not sure of your location (and we don’t need to know) but could it be that this is the only psyche available in your area? If there are others, yes, I’d be getting back to your doc to see who might else be ok to be referred too?

You ask is there somewhere you could go – again, I’d be asking your treating gp as I would think they would be best advised of where you could possibly go, indeed if there are ‘such’ places available?

For immediate help though, ok, we are just a website, but there’s a lot of people on this site, who are all like-minded individuals, and are only too happy to try to help out and offer advice gained through our own experience of living with our own mental illnesses.

There’s also the phone number at the top of each page, plus the ‘chat’ facility with a professional counsellor from Beyond Blue.

I hope I’ve offered something of use to you and would love to hear back from you.

Hi Blue Nightingale,

I don't really have much else to add other than to what Neil has already suggested.

I too have found it difficult to get in to see a local psyche. Like Neil mentioned, if possible, return to your Dr and ask if there is anyone else in the area who could get you in quicker.

Also see if there are any counselling services in your area. Quite often Church groups offer something. This might tide you over until you can get in to see the Psyche.

As Neil mentioned, use the phone numbers that are available here at Beyond Blue, Life Line, The Mental Health Team, or who ever you can contact.

I have also found it helpful to Google ways to overcome depression and anxiety. Don't dwell on reading about the illnesses themselves, just the recovery sections.

It helps most people to share their stories here on this forum, so hopefully you will comfortable to share more and hopefully others will add some advice.

If you feel like you are about to totally lose it, then please call the ambulance service or go to your nearest hospital and ask to talk with someone there.

I also find that distraction is a good thing. Do you have a favourite funny movie to watch, a book to read, puzzles to do, music to play?
