I'm currently studying, but am finding it really hard to go to my lectures and tutorials because the entire time I'm there, I feel vaguely like I can't breathe! I've not had full panic attacks, but the constant nervousness and tight chest makes it really hard for me to pay attention, and I dread going to tutorials where I have to talk to people.

I'm starting to skip more and more classes, and I really don't want to jeopardise my degree.

Does anyone have any tips on reducing the anxiety?!

Hi Alison,

You might want to check out thedesk, which is an online beyondblue resource that many students have found useful. Some of the tools there include:

Modules to develop problem-solving and self-management skills. Topics include getting things done, staying calm, staying connected and feeling good.

Tools to help with everyday issues such as relaxation, challenging unhelpful thoughts, using feedback constructively and problem solving.

Quizzes about different areas of life such as relationships, physical health and mental wellbeing.

An online Coffee House for students to connect with other students, share experiences, music, art, recipes and more!

Links to information and support services to help deal with a range of common issues.

You may also wish to consider talking to the student welfare service on your campus, who should be able to help you out with appropriate referrals to support, counselling etc. You can also call our support service on 1300 22 4636 or speak to our professional counsellors over web chat between 3pm and midnight, 7 days a week.

Thank you, Christopher.

I have had full-blown panic attacks the first day of uni each semester and it got worse the further I got through. I lost 10kg in semester two last year because of anxiety and ended up on antidepressants and sleeping tablets. I have weaned myself off the antidepressants as they had some unacceptable side effects, but I still take the sleeping tablets. Asking for a divorce has made me feel better, but I still can't concentrate on my studies and my once straight HD rate has slumped to a credit or maybe a distinction if I'm really lucky. I'm a nursing student and most of what I have left is clinical placements which I'm really anxious about - thus proving that being 'smart' is not always the best thing.

I'll check out the links and maybe I can try to beat this stupid OCPD (obsessive compulsive personality disorder for those not familiar - it's a little different from OCD).

Thanks, Kree
