How are you? that's a question I wish I was asked at school...And I wish there was time to ask it and give time and space to explore it in our schools from an early age and the resources, human and otherwise to address it.

Eh. "How are you?" is a stock-standard phrase, which means whenever it's asked, I assume the person doesn't really care, but is merely following empty social protocol. I saw school counsellors a couple of times, but only about twice each - not long enough for me to actually get to trust these people and confide in them. So I just said "Fine. Yeah I'm fine. I dunno, I guess I just need to work harder *fake smile*. Bye."

It wouldn't have been so much about questions, for me, personally, 'cause I would have given you the answers I thought you wanted to hear. What would have worked (and later did work) for me is a friend confiding similarly personal and vulnerable things to me, thus making me comfortable enough to reciprocate. I didn't have any close friends in school, though.

dear Unclaimed Cabbage, if you said to me that your fine, then my alarm bells would start to ring, because FINE is an ambiguous answer.

It's a pretend word to me that means there is so much doubt in saying it, or a cover up word, because you want them to go, plus you don't want to have to talk to them. Geoff.

I agree. I think "I'm fine" means either I do not really want to say because I am really feeling horrible or I am busy and do not want to think about it.

The question I wish I was asked is "Would you like to go to university?". The three options we girls were encouraged to pursue were nursing (training in the hospital), teaching (teachers college) and secretary (had to do shorthand).

These days it is a lot easier to pursue an education. Just harder to know when you have enough of one. Cheers, Mulberry.

I was actually asked if I was okay, from a teacher who had nothing but concern on my face. For me it wasn't what I would have liked to be asked, it's what I would have liked to have said. But the answer was, surprise, surprise, I'm fine

"Fine" always makes me chuckle Geoff. Every good/wise husband knows when the wife says"fine" then things are most definitely not lol.

I actually did approach a teacher for help in Year 12. I wanted her support re abuse at home. Instead she rang my parents & told them what I said. There was hell to pay when I got home. Lesson: it didn't pay to ask for help. It was many many years before I tried again.

I'm sorry to hear that yellownanna. That was the primary reason that I didn't say anything. For me it took 9 year to ask for help.

This is an older post but I thought I'd bring it back because there's probably so many answers out there!

I wish that I'd got asked 'Did you want to talk?' or 'Do you want to sit here for a while?' I had teachers that knew I was having a hard time, but I often got cliche responses like 'keep smiling', or 'don't worry', or 'it's not that bad'. I think being able to really be heard would have been so important. You never really know how much someone can be struggling on the inside.

I wish someone had asked in high school " I noticed you are often alone at lunchtime, lets talk ".

"I have noticed you sitting in your dads car but you didn't come yo school, how can I help?"

The trouble the girl I was then would have cried and run away if someone had noticed me at all.

This is something I wish I had as well. I was by far rather unpopular. I had family problems, which really caused me anxiety.

I wish I had teachers who I guess asked if I was ok. I think that would have gotten me to put more faith into people besides the whole "you're young, you'll be ok"
