Hi CheeseSlices. When I first started volunteering, C'link demanded I fulfil 30 hours per fortnight, plus check-in fortnightly. The company I volunteered with was registered with C'link. C'link, to my knowledge never 'checked-up' whether I fulfilled the required hours. If the company has you listed as a volunteer, C'link will be satisfied. You may also have to report to an employment agency on a fortnightly basis. If you have a disability, C'link will still require you check-in. You can apply for a dispensation form from C'link which excuses you from reporting, however you have to be over 50 and fulfilling the required 30 hours per fortnight. The form has to be signed by the firm you are volunteering with. Even if you do not fulfil the required hours, C'link seldom check as the firm will have you listed.

Dear Rufio,

In Victoria we have a website called "Volunteering Victoria" which lets you access all sorts of volunteering jobs. I imagine there is the same sort of thing in N.S.W., so try googling "Volunteering NSW" or "Sydney". Your local council would also have various opportunities available. And of course you could approach various charities such as the Salvation Army and St.Vincent de Paul directly, Just dash off a note saying you re interested in volunteering and they will always get back to you.

Good on you for looking at volunteering. I do some volunteer work myself, and it is a great source of satisfaction to do something you enjoy while helping others. There is certainly a great need for volunteers out there.

Hi rufio. Good for you wanting to volunteer your services. I have been volunteering about 18 months and it's a great feeling, knowing you are helping someone less fortunate. Most places who are seeking volunteers, may ask how often you wish to work. Some have an on-call system, where they will phone and ask if you can work. Meals on wheels usually work to a roster system, Vinnies/Lifeline are similar. I actually volunteer with a transport company, we take clients to Dr's/hospital appointments, we have shopping transport, we do tours etc. With my job, it's an 'on-call' system, they phone me and ask if I'm available next day. The job I have meant I had to get 'police clearance' because I actually visit and take shopping inside. Also with driving, I needed an RDA, which is an authorization.

I was an active volunteer for 20 years and did make a paying position out of my role. It was a nice community while it lasted. I was let go because they were worried my ever increasing prescribed medication was clouding my judgement.

If you are on centerlink payments this will be an issue. You must report.

I am now too highly disabled to even leave the house, shower, clean or cook for myself - I have been trying to get off medication for 2 years so I can go back to the work I love.

I had no worries on very low pay where I worked as I had many perks that made up for it.

Volunteering is good - but also be aware that some places will take advantage of free labor or overwork you. I had many issues with trying to balance how much work I could take on - its hard to set boundaries when there is so much to be done.

Hi,

There are many places that could use the help of a willing reliable person.

I have recently given time at a community of elderly people in their dementia unit visiting community members. A couple of years ago i googled retirement homes, checked to see if they had volunteers working for them and what sort of things they did. Sometimes working with vulnerable people you may have to go through a process and after it is done it is well worth it.

My job was to spend time with different community members engaging in some of their interests like walking/sitting in the garden, chatting/listening about anything that sparked the conversation, sometimes helping other volunteers/workers doing craft/gardening and on some occasions just sitting with someone.

Another place i have helped with a group of volunteers was at a community day care centre. We all had set little jobs to help the centre with [making tea/coffee, serving morning tea, greeting clients as they arrived, just having a chat] and also helped staff with activities that the clients wanted to engage in like playing games, sing a longs, cooking and sometimes going on outings.

Next year i hope to volunteer transporting clients to different places with a community group, there is training to do this sort of volunteer job but they provide it before you start.

Loved both my volunteer jobs and they gave me great joy and the feeling of being able to give back to community.

I found a lot of different things out there to volunteer in by googling volunteer jobs in my city but then chose to find something that suited me best [love to be social].

Have fun exploring the avenues to your volunteer job.

Gen

Hey rufio,

Thanks for your post.

It's great you want to look at volunteering - I personally really like Seek Volunteering as a good tool https://www.volunteer.com.au/

On that website you can also filter your searches to either where you are, what you enjoy doing (driving, admin, etc) and how long you want to commit. You can also add 'Centrelink approved' if you need to.

Another thing you could try is contacting the organisation/place you want to volunteer with. They may not directly advertise vacancies but lots of places always want helpers! I've done this before and it worked really well.

Potentially a volunteer role could lead to a pair role, at least a job reference and even new friends.

Hello rufio and others.

I'm sorry to hear that you're unemployed, but good on you for joining the forums (welcome), and for trying to find stuff for you to do.

I'm not exactly sure what's around Sydney since I'm in Victoria, but you could try something like these:

An Op Shop.

Working at an Animal Shelter/Vet Clinic, such as Dog Walking or something.

Helping out the community so possibly trying to do Sausage Sizzles, Fundraisers (such as Raffles), trying to join communities like the Rotary Club perhaps?

You could even try to join something like Beyond Blue, Cancer Council, any great charity and raise money for them somehow.

That's all I can think of currently but there's so many things you could try. I suppose your best bet would be searching up volunteer work near you (your suburb or nearby), and calling and/or emailing people and places to ask if they're taking volunteers and if you have to be a certain age, and asking them if they pay or not.

Best of luck, I hope you find something and that you enjoy it.
