I have had an ongoing fascination with analysing personality, and what makes myself and others tick, and have found the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to be a surprisingly accurate measure of such things. I have catalogued the types of many of the people in my life, and probably driven them nuts with my project. It's an interesting study, though, observing consistent traits among the types, how they relate to life skills, coping strategies, how they function in different settings and why.

If you know your type, feel free to share, and things you may have discovered about yourself or that have helped you relate to others using resources about it. If you don't know your type, and want to, I found the site 16 Personalities pretty good for testing and dissecting the types.

If it's of any interest, I am an INTP, and the information about my type on that site is pretty spot-on. I've only used that as a starting point for my research. There is so much information out there on the types, and the differences between them that actually goes a long way to breaking down the core of otherwise confusing conflicts, or getting the most out of a person at work or in a friendship, etc.

Anyway, it's a bit of a project of mine, and I wanted to open it up to anyone who wants to contribute.

Hey Blues

I already know my personality type but as per your interesting topic I will have a look see at the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and see what they think of me...do they have a definition of what a INTP is? I would love to contribute..I just finished conversating with you on your other thread 🙂

Hi dear Blue

I decided to do the test on the 16 personalities website. I was INFP - T. As I was reading the description on this particular personality, I did see myself in it. I even heard myself say " Oh my gosh" aloud, because it said the people with the INFP personality avoid speaking on phones if they can. I really dislike speaking on phones, and I always have. I will even let in ring out.

So the letters in your personality are almost the same as mine except for one letter. I know the "f" letter in mine is" feeling". So what is" t" in yours?

I also had a - T, after the other letters, which indicates "turbulent" Well that is pretty much how I feel at the present.

I would be interesting to know what others are too. Have you done the test Mr Woof? I would be interested because you pick up on other peoples emotions like me.

Good topic dear Blue.

In kindness

Delightful. I have a few INFPs in my life, including my sister. A tricky personality to get to know - deeply private and often worried about imposing on others - but rewarding, too. Where you are a Feeling person, I am a Thinking person, hence the "T". And where you are Turbulent, I am Assertive.

Though there is only one letter different in our types, they are quite different in practice. I've found INFPs to be spiritual, warm, compassionate, sensitive and creative people who crave harmony. We INTPs, conversely, are logic-oriented and don't engage much with emotion. We tend to come at pretty much everything from an intellectual and analytical standpoint. We crave knowledge and understanding of everything, though if we don't work on it, can be a bit clueless about people's feelings. We're not great at prioritising that sort of thing, I've had to learn to treat navigating the sea of human interaction and emotion as an intellectual exercise so I don't suck at it so much.

Thanks for the feedback.

Blue.

Yes Blue, I thought you may have been a logical sort of person. The reason I say that is because when I read other people's posts I pick up on their emotions. It is like emotions just pop out at me. But then there are other people like yourself, that I cannot pick up any emotion at all.

And also I actually have a hard time with facts, unless it is something extremely interesting to me, like this personality stuff.

Hm, this thread is proving a haven for INFPs. I admit, I have a bit of a soft spot for the INFP type. You're a quiet, quirky lot, accepting of oddballs like me that don't do social norms, and very easy and low-maintenance to be around. Thank you guys for sharing.

Paul, I've only known one other ENFJ, and I do see similarities between the two of you. Warm, fun, and active in your respective communities, you being a carer and him working with youth. I'm not close with him, and am just getting to know you, so I look forward to learning more about the type and seeing it in practice, not just theory.

Shelley, I was being facetious about the swelled head, but there is actually a bit of truth to it. From an outside perspective an INTPs slowness to act on our ideas may seem like a lack of confidence in ourselves or poor self-esteem, but it's actually that we get caught up in a loop of constantly gathering data and trying to improve further on those ideas. A bit of a catch for us.

I've known several other INTPs, and I can say that we typically feel pretty good about ourselves. We take criticism well, it's extremely hard to shake our self-esteem and comparatively easy to bolster it. Because we rely on logic, we can easily disregard naysayers who typically run on emotion and their own insecurities to bring others down, and are conversely perfectly comfortable accepting compliments because we know darn well how awesome we are. 😉

Sherie, I hope you'll be pleased with what the site has to say about your type. You do show signs of what is said there, being inclined to create harmony, to be inclusive and observant and make a great deal of effort toward others without squeaking for the spotlight. I see a lot of the characteristics described in your interactions in the Café.

I know one other ISFJ, my manager at work, and he's the bees knees in my opinion. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of everyone in the department and makes sure everyone's getting as much satisfaction from their job as they can whilst also maximising efficiency. He puts in a lot of effort to make sure everything goes as smoothly as it can, and doesn't take anywhere near enough credit or recognition for his efforts. Do you see any of yourself in that, on a personal or professional level?

Okay, so here is what it says about me. Much of it is true.

ISFJ Strengths:

Supportive - the universal helpers, sharing knowledge, experience, time and energy with anyone who needs it.

Reliable and Patient – meticulous and careful, takes a steady approach to ensure that things are done to the highest standard.

Imaginative and Observant – very imaginative, and use this as an accessory to empathy, observing others' emotional states and seeing things from their perspective. A very practical imagination.

Enthusiastic – When the goal is right, ISFJs take all this support, reliability and imagination and apply it to something they believe will make a difference in people's lives.

Good Practical Skills – have the practical sense to do something with all this altruism. ISFJs can see the beauty and harmony that mundane or routine tasks can create, because they know it helps them to care for their friends, family, and anyone else who needs it.

ISFJ Weaknesses:

Humble and Shy – so concerned with others' feelings that they refuse to make their thoughts known, or to take any duly earned credit for their contributions. ISFJs' standards for themselves are so high that and often downplay their successes entirely.

Take Things Too Personally – ISFJs have trouble separating personal and impersonal situations.

Repress Their Feelings – private and very sensitive, internalize their feelings a great deal. Much in the way that ISFJs protect others' feelings, they must protect their own, and this lack of healthy emotional expression can lead to a lot of stress and frustration.

Overload Themselves – Their strong senses of duty and perfectionism combine with this aversion to emotional conflict to create a situation where it is far too easy to overload themselves – or to be overloaded by others – as they struggle silently to meet everyone's expectations, especially their own.

Reluctant to Change – ISFJ personalities value traditions and history highly in their decisions. A situation sometimes needs to reach a breaking point before ISFJs are persuaded by circumstance, or the strong personality of a loved one, to alter course.

Too Altruistic – This is all compounded and reinforced by ISFJs' otherwise wonderful quality of altruism. Being such warm, good-natured people, ISFJs are willing to let things slide, to believe that things will get better soon, to not burden others by accepting their offers of help, while their troubles mount unassisted.

Mmm, interesting.

Hi Blue. Yeah, most of it does. Its really pretty accurate, except it says I'm imaginative, but I dont believe I am.

I just read this bit as a kind of summary of my 'type':

As an ISFJ, or Defender personality, you have a hugely positive impact on others. Your empathy, commitment and loyalty are invaluable. You take care of others, work hard, and at times your altruism shines like a beacon of light in the darkness. But having a Defender personality can be a blessing and a curse... Your dedication often goes unrewarded. And sometimes you feel like you’re sacrificing your own happiness to help others. Your values and beliefs are important to you – but sometimes it seems like the rest of the world works differently.

Probably all true ...... Its all very interesting isnt it? And you've been doing a bit of a study of all this stuff? What got you interested in the first place?
