Most of us like to read when we feel up to it. Anything from a newspaper, magazine to a good book, etc.

I love reading. I figured while I've got health issues and therefore time I may as well improve my life somehow.

I like self help books. I have a few books on Acupressure, which I started buying this year.I learnt a lot from these books which directed me towards other things. I've needed to learn/relearn social skills so I buy books on dating/how to meet women so I can at least learn those skills. I've bought several books lately. As a guy I love reading books on cars and how to type mechanical work, restorations, etc. Then I bought books on spraypainting as well.

Books by Allan Pease are always good for self improvement. 2 books I recommend of his are:

1)Talk Language.

2)Write Language.

Both great books.

I like to read up on books on how to run a business and franchising.Interesting topics. Then human resources, etc.Lot of great books out there.

I find that reading just keeps your mind active and occupied. Its comforting.

Your turn. What do you like to read?

Hey Denv12, great topic!

I tend to read a lot of novels and comedy books as distractions and a form of entertainment. As my name suggests, I absolutely adore C.S Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, but I also enjoy John Green's novels, Beau Taplin's poetry and Ellen Degeneres' biographies. I have a pretty wide range of books, my whole house is filled with over-full bookshelves, and I also read a lot of both entertainment and informational magazines, particularly Rolling Stone.

Reading is definitely a brilliant distraction tool for anxiety and depression, as well as being able to learn or be entertained while you're doing it!

Hi Denv12 and Narniakid

Great question!

I love biographies and memoirs. I also read a lot of comedy and I'm very passionate about health, cooking and psychology so I read a lot of those books too. One of my favourite books is 'The last lecture' by Randy Pausch and 'Tuesdays with Morrie' by Mitch Albom.

I also love Beau Taplin - I haven't read any of his books but I see a lot of his work online and fall in love with it.

I've read all Patricia Cornwall, Stuart McBride, Ian Rankin, Val McDermid & range of Scandinavian novels. I usually keep up with latest books but havnt read a crime book for several months. Any recommendations? I like thrillers

Thanks!

Hi Mares,

I haven't read the authors you have so I am not sure how it would compare but Vince Flynn writes political thrillers that are quite good. David Baldacci writes thrillers too, they are good but a very easy read. Duane Swierczynski writes crime fiction. I read the Charlie Hardy Trilogy that begins with "Fun and Games", it was written in a different style than I have read before and I enjoyed it.

Hi Grok,

Who are you favourite sci fi/fantasy authors. Always keen to hear what people like.

Cheers,

Julian May would be my favourite, but others I enjoy a lot are Heinlein, Asimov, Jim Butcher, Geogre Martin, Tolkien, Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Doctor Who, Raymond Feist, Conan, Drew Hayes, James Clavell, Ben Elton, Robin Hobb, Neal Stephenson, Gibson, Steven Donaldson, Katherne Kerr and others I'll regret not adding 🙂

Hi Grok,

Thanks for sharing that. There are a few there I haven't read so that's a bonus.

I must look up Julian May's books too. I have only read the Trillium series.

Have you read Terry Brooks. He is one of the few authors that I think gets better as he progresses with the Shanara series. I lost interest in Feist when he started co-authoring with others though I have still read them all, his early work is much better 🙂 Did you read the Janny Wurts novels that supplemented the Feist books? I enjoyed reading of the same story from the perspective of the enemy.

Cheers,

The many coloured would be the best one to start IMO with Julian May. That series and the galactic series that loops with it are her high point.

I just finished relistening to the daughter of empire series. Them and a few of the ones after the original trilogy was where I stopped. Then they started blending into each other a bit. His author Facebook page is pretty good, always positive.

I read the first of the Shanara books a long time ago. Keep meaning to give them a reread. Did you see the new tv show based of them? I don't know how accurate they were but made for pleasant watching.

Thanks, I will give that a try.

I haven't seen the series, I have heard mixed reviews but I am still keen to see it. I think there are variances from the books so it's probably good that it has been a while, for me too.

The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara Trilogy was excellent. It is a good starting point if you have read the earlier works.

I enjoyed those Janny Wurts books but haven't been able to get into her other novels.

It's funny with Stephen Donaldson. When I first read the Thomas Covenant series I hated the first two books because they were so descriptive and so slow but by the time I had read the third I had completely changed my mind. I am glad I didn't give up.

Did you read Katharine Kerr's Deverry Series?

Hi there...great to find this as I am a brand new member! Yay me! I LOVE reading...particularly biographies and fiction from around the world...armchair travelling is a great thing for reinforcing empathy! Recent reads include Salt Creek by Lucy Treloar about the clash of cultures and early european "settlement" in the Coorong region of south australia...a beauty. Also continually cookbooks by Luke Nyugen(sp) and Kylie Kwong and "The Clatter of Forks and Spoons" by the Irish chef Richard Corrigan. Lots of gardening and chook books. Certainly up for some good new fiction recommendations...such a great way to pause one's own inner dialogue when it gets horrendous and/or dangerous.

Hi, Im pretty new around here. I like to read because it helps me to momentarily escape from the problems in my life. That's if I'm in the frame of mind where I can concentrate enough. I tend to skim over passages sometimes without really comprehending what I'm reading. Ive always liked to read. Dont have any favourite authors in particular but I like to read romances (not Mills and Boon type of fluff!) and sagas. Ive never had much romance in my life so I like to escape with romances if I can. I recently read a great big book called Paris which covered some of the history of Paris. I've read about 19 books this year and would like to read some more. I tend to borrow books from the library rather than buy them.

My favourite books are all fantasy and I am a huge sucker for any kind of tragedy element. My favourite books are

Harry Potter (duh)

Lotr/ the hobbit (Fun fact I'm named after Arwen daughter of Elrond :P)

Tinder by Sally Gardner- It's a fantasy book that is a gothic reinvention of the H. C. Anderson fairytale 'the tinderbox' and it actually breaks my heart.

The 'His Dark Materials' trilogy by Phillip Pullman- It's so exciting and heart wrenching and just makes me want to cry.

'Neverwhere' by Neil Gaiman is amazing, it's a fantasy I guess but one to be taken a little less seriously

Overall I JUST LOVE BOOKS and I'd love to hear any Fantasy suggestions or any opinions of people who've read these books or similar. Thanks for reading 😛

Hello! I know this reply's quite late, but I LOVE reading! I mean, I can never really concentrate on reading anymore, I just can't focus on anything anymore, but i still love reading. I haven't got any favourite books, but my favourite authors are John Green and Jodi Picoult and authors like that, and I like reading about any sort of issues.
