mum of 2 boys- 5 years and 3 yrs relocated in 2017 from melbourne to brisbane, only for my eldest sons chronic eczema. our move has helped his health, and he has taken off really well. hubby found a good job. but I have lost all my friends and my family in melbourne. maybe its the age: i am nearing 40, and am finding difficult to make friends. with my business not doing that well, and job not an option for me, I am feeling very alone the entire day. i find it difficult to uplift myself and everyday seems like a weight on my shoulders. i dont think my hubby gets it, as his social interaction is sorted at work, while mine is zero. i really want to know how to help myself. thank you

Relocation and loneliness

Hi Prathna and welcome to our forums

Thank you for sharing your story. Relocating is quite a change and is difficult to settle down. I have moved quite a bit in my life so understand how this can affect one's life. Some moves have been better than others. I know how difficult building new friendships is and how disheartening it is at times. So my heart goes out to you.

Have you tried looking at activities that are available for mums with young bubs in Queensland? There are a wide range of activities available at libraries and parks. I've found this is a great place to meet other mums. Southbank precinct is another alternative, loads of activities in and around that area.

Moving cities does mean leaving friends and family behind. I've found this to be the hardest part of any move. So, I try to maintain contact with the people I've left by using Facebook and Skyping. While it doesn't replace - flesh and blood, it does help me a little to not feel so lonely. I love to talk with family and friends in other parts of Australia.

It's hard work building friendships. I've found as I get older it's more difficult. The key for me now is - joining lots of different groups. Some through facebook, some through the volunteer work I do, some special interest groups. It's taken 10 years to not feel so lonely after my last move.

Hope some of this helps Prathna.

Kind regards
