Hi, welcome

I have bipolar, depression and dysthymia. My mania in 3003 was falsely diagnosed with ADHD.

My happiness has been due to adopting philosophies on life. I pick out experiences and hold onto them

I am struggling to keep it all together - dealing with rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, uveitis, adhd, high functioning autism, depresssion..

and like everyone else, life.

Just keep on moving and doing. ( Btw, this forum could really do with a disability section I reckon). Fortunately, I am proactive and motivated to take control and have a strong desire to pull myself out no matter how much I feel I am sinking. Sometimes I am not sure if the way I am trying to heal and deal is the right way and sometimes it's in conflict with health professionals and what family think I should do. So, it often becomes an area of conflict.

At times, I get in to a panic and spiral..

feeling like I can't keep going..

but, I keep taking steps anyway because I am optimistic.. inspired by Frieda Kahlo to keep following my passions regardless of when I feel out of control with my health.

I am open minded and look forward to an exchange of ideas that lead to a happier life.

Hi don’tpaintbynumbers,

You sound like you have a lot going on. I think your combination of physical and mental health issues (plus life in general) sounds very exhausting...

I like your attitude that comes across in your writing. I think it’s great that you have such a proactive mindset, and are determined to do all you can to help yourself. I find that admirable 🙂

I also liked how you mentioned Frida Khalo. She was one inspiring and gutsy person, despite all of her struggles and setbacks. I’m happy that you look up to her...

I get what you’re saying about how sometimes it’s a delicate balance between professional advice and what you feel is personally right for you. My personal opinion is there’s no definitive answer as to how to best manage that conflict.

I suppose it depends, to some extent, from case by case. On the one hand, professionals are the experts in health care (physical and mental). But on the other hand, you’re the expert on you...

As for what leads to a happier life, I feel that’s a pretty complex topic. It goes without saying that this might vary a little (or a lot) between individuals as well as between different cultures. For example, more individualistic cultures might place an emphasis on self determination and chasing our own dreams and goals as “happiness.” Whereas more collectivist cultures might define “happiness” as more about fulfilling your duty to your loved ones and to your community, and that your loved one’s wellbeing is the same as your own happiness.

Personally, I’m not sure...sometimes I feel happiness (for me at least) feels rather elusive. I experience moments of joy, but those moments tend to be fleeting. Thus, I tend to focus more on a sense of purpose and meaning, rather than joy.

I would be happy to continue talking to you to exchange thoughts and ideas...also, I think your suggestion for a disability forum is a great idea.

Perhaps you might like to look up a thread called, The forum suggestions/improvements thread and add a comment there. If you’re interested, the easiest way to add to find it is to type “the forum suggestions/improvements thread” in the BeyondBlue search bar.

Kind thoughts to you today,

Pepper
