Hi, my 30 year old daughter was just diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, she is already on anti pyscotic medication for her autism and has always suffered dreadfully with depression. She has an intellectual delay also. I really would like to know more about her new diagnosis, I only found out today by reading a medical form for her to apply for housing. There it was.... Why I hadn't been told by the mental health team I have no idea. Would love some positive ways forward. Thank you for reading.

Hello Indie and welcome to Beyond Blue forums

Our community is caring, friendly, supportive and non judgmental. It’s good you’ve found your way here.

I’m not familiar with schizoaffective disorder, though I did find some very useful information from a SANE blog. Are you able to do a search on google for - schizoaffective disorder SANE blog? It provides a far amount of information about the common symptoms and symptoms. There is no cure for schizoaffective disorder.

Apparently, there are treatments that can help manage symptoms. These generally incorporate a combination of medication, psychotherapy (individual and family) and life skills training (social skills training and vocational rehabilitation and supported employment).

Are you able to approach the Mental Health Team to talk what this might mean for her and her ongoing support?
Do you have support yourself? Caring and supporting someone does take it’s toll and it really is important you look after yourself too. You are just as important.

Keep reaching out here if and when you want to Indie. I’m sure others out there with a similar experience will share their story and how they manage.

Kind regards
PamelaR
